The Thing Nobody Posts About on Social Media That Actually Connects Neighbors | A Neighborly Tip
I noticed something at my neighbor's apartment complex last spring — a corkboard tucked near the mailboxes, half-covered in slightly curling flyers and a hand-drawn map of the community garden plots. Someone had pinned a recipe card for sourdough starter next to a lost-cat notice. It was, honestly, a little chaotic. But I stood there longer than I meant to, reading every single thing on it. There's something about physical paper and someone else's handwriting that makes you feel like you've been let in on something.
I think a community bulletin board works not because it shares information, but because it proves that real people live nearby — people with cats who wander, with sourdough ambitions, with a spare lawnmower they'll lend on Tuesdays. The digital neighborhood apps we all downloaded with good intentions somehow never quite carry that weight. A post online disappears in a feed. A pinned index card with a torn phone number fringe at the bottom? That stays. Someone made a small effort, and that effort sits there in front of you, asking nothing except maybe your attention for thirty seconds. I find that kind of offering quietly generous in a way that's hard to name.
If you're thinking about setting one up — in a lobby, near a community mailbox, outside a church hall, wherever neighbors actually pass through — I'd say keep it low-pressure from the start. Leave a stack of index cards and a cup of pushpins nearby. Don't curate it too carefully. The slightly messy ones, I've noticed, invite participation better than the perfectly laminated ones, because a messy board is already saying: this belongs to all of us. That's the whole point, really. Not a board that announces things at people, but one that holds a little piece of everyone who lives there.
If this one stuck with you, my Basketball Shorts Mockup Canva Template for Printify and... might be useful too. It's a digital download on Gumroad. (It's also in my Etsy shop.)
