The Shy Person's Case for Handing a Stranger a Trowel | A Neighborly Tip
The Shy Person's Case for Handing a Stranger a Trowel | A Neighborly Tip
I noticed something a few summers ago when my neighbor Carol spread a tarp across her driveway and set out six small pots of tomato seedlings. She hadn't announced anything grand — just taped a handwritten index card to her mailbox that said "Saturday, 10am, bring gloves if you have them." By 10:15, there were nine of us standing around that tarp in various degrees of knowing what we were doing. A retired teacher. A college student home for the summer. Me, holding a trowel like it was a foreign object. What I remember most isn't what Carol said about root depth or drainage. It's that nobody was on their phone, and everyone was looking at the same small thing.
I think that's the quiet genius of a gardening workshop — not that people leave knowing more, but that they leave having been somewhere together. There's something about working with dirt that levels the room. Nobody feels like an expert, so nobody performs. The woman who usually only waves from her car will tell you about the basil she keeps killing, and suddenly you know something true about her. It's the kind of conversation that doesn't happen at a block party with a red cup in your hand. It happens when your hands are otherwise occupied and your guard is just low enough.
If I were to do it myself — and I've been turning the idea over — I'd keep it genuinely small. Maybe six people. A folding table, some seed packets, a bag of potting mix. I'd resist the urge to make it look like a Pinterest board, because I think the slightly imperfect version is what makes people feel safe enough to stay. There's a verse I come back to sometimes, something about how a gentle answer turns things — and I find that applies to hospitality too. You don't need a program. You just need to mean it when you say come over.
