Daily Prayer: When I Keep My Eyes on Him, I Don't Fall Apart
Daily Prayer: When I Keep My Eyes on Him, I Don't Fall Apart
"I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken."
— Psalm 16:8
I was standing at the kitchen counter this morning, holding my coffee with both hands — not drinking it, just holding it — staring at nothing in particular on the backsplash.
It wasn't a dramatic moment. Nothing was wrong. I wasn't spiraling or overwhelmed. I was just... between things. That small gap between the end of one task and the beginning of the next, when your brain briefly goes offline like a laptop screen dimming to save power.
And somehow, in that little pause, this verse came to me.
The Verse That Keeps Finding Me
Psalm 16:8 is one of those verses I've read so many times it feels like an old friend — familiar enough that I sometimes skim right past it. But this morning it landed differently.
I keep my eyes always on the Lord.
Not "sometimes." Not "when things get hard." Always.
I thought about where my eyes actually are on any given day. My inbox. The work deadline I'm quietly calculating in the back of my mind. The text thread with my daughter — who is grown and capable and doing just fine, and yet I still check it more than I probably need to, because that's apparently just how this works now.
My eyes are a lot of places. The Lord is not always first on the list, if I'm being honest about it.
What "Not Being Shaken" Actually Looks Like
I used to read that second part — I will not be shaken — and picture something dramatic. Standing firm in a storm. Resisting great opposition. Very cinematic.
But I think, in real everyday life, "not being shaken" looks a lot more ordinary than that.
It looks like a conversation with my husband that doesn't veer into frustration because I'm grounded enough to actually listen. It looks like a work meeting that doesn't throw off my whole day because I walked into it with some sense of steadiness already in place. It looks like my daughter calling with a problem she needs to think through out loud, and me being genuinely present for it instead of half-distracted.
Not shaken isn't the absence of hard things. It's having something solid under your feet when the hard things show up.
The Posture Behind the Promise
What strikes me about this verse is that it's written in the present tense. I keep — not "I kept" or "I will try to keep." It's an ongoing, active thing. A posture more than a moment.
David, who wrote this, was not living a smooth life. He knew what it felt like to have the ground shift. And yet here he is, writing with this settled confidence — not because everything was fine, but because he'd made a habit of where he looked.
I find that genuinely encouraging. Not in a tidy, tack-it-on-a-mug way. In a real, practical way. The stability isn't a reward for doing everything right. It's the result of a habit of attention.
Keep your eyes on Him. That's it. That's the whole thing.
My Very Ordinary Attempt at This
I'm not going to pretend I've got this mastered. Some mornings I remember. Some mornings I'm three tabs deep into my email before I've said a single word to God.
But I notice the difference in my days when I start with Him rather than starting with everything else. There's a quality to those days that I can't fully explain. A kind of groundedness that's not self-generated — because I know what self-generated groundedness feels like, and it runs out by about 10 a.m.
This is something else. Something that holds.
I think that's what David was pointing at. Not a formula, not a technique. Just the simple, repeated act of turning your gaze toward the one who actually holds things together.
Even when you're just standing at a kitchen counter, holding your coffee, staring at a backsplash.
Maybe especially then.
A Prayer for Today
Lord, I want to keep my eyes on You — but You already know how easily I look away. Not out of rebellion, usually. Just distraction. Habit. The pull of the next thing on the list.
Would You be patient with me today? I think You will be. You always are.
Help me remember, in the ordinary moments — the in-between ones, the busy ones, the ones that don't feel particularly spiritual at all — that You're right there. At my right hand, like You said. Not far off, not waiting for me to get my act together first.
I don't need a dramatic day to need You. I just need today. And I'd really like to go through it with some steadiness that doesn't come from me.
Thank You for being the kind of God who shows up for the ordinary Tuesday-morning-at-the-kitchen-counter moments. I'm grateful it counts.
Amen.
