Daily Prayer: When God Is For You, the Math Changes
Daily Prayer: When God Is For You, the Math Changes
"What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?"
— Romans 8:31
I was refilling my coffee this morning — the second cup, the one I actually taste — and I caught myself just standing at the counter for a moment longer than necessary.
Not because anything was wrong. Just because the light coming through the kitchen window was doing something nice, and the house was still relatively collected, and I thought: this is actually fine.
Which sounds like a low bar. But I think it's actually a pretty decent one.
The Verse I Keep Coming Back To
Romans 8:31 is one of those verses I've had memorized for years, the kind that lives in the back of your mind like a familiar song. You know it so well you almost stop hearing it.
But lately it's been landing differently.
If God is for us, who can be against us?
Paul asks it like a rhetorical question, which it absolutely is — but it's also a real one. Because most of us, if we're being honest, have a running mental list of who or what feels like it's against us on any given day. The difficult coworker. The deadline. The weird tension in a conversation we can't quite name.
The list isn't always dramatic. Sometimes it's just the accumulation of small friction that makes a day feel heavier than it should.
The Part That Resets Everything
What I love about this verse — and I mean genuinely love, not just "appreciate as a theological concept" — is the if.
Not because. Not since. If.
Paul is inviting us to sit with the premise for a second. To actually let it register. God is for you. Not neutral. Not watching from a distance. Not keeping score. For. you.
Once that settles in — really settles in — the math on everything else shifts a little.
I notice I carry less when I remember this. Not because my circumstances changed, but because the frame around them did.
What It Looks Like on an Ordinary Day
I've been married long enough to know that love is largely made up of ordinary moments. My husband and I have built a life that isn't always exciting and is often really good. We have an adult kid now, which is its own strange and wonderful thing — watching someone you raised become a full person with opinions and a schedule and a life that belongs entirely to them.
None of that is what I pictured when I was young and imagining adulthood. It's better, actually. More textured. More real.
And I think that's what God being for us looks like up close. Not fireworks. Just the steady, underlying current of grace running through the regular stuff — the second cup of coffee, the good light, the fact that things are, against some odds, fine.
When the Opposition Feels Real
I don't want to be glib about it. There are days when the question who can be against us? doesn't feel rhetorical at all. There are days when the answer feels like a long list.
But even then — especially then — I think Paul's point holds. It's not that nothing hard exists. It's that nothing hard is the final word.
God being for us doesn't mean we float above difficulty. It means we don't face it alone, and we don't face it without someone who has already seen how the story ends.
That changes the posture, even when it doesn't change the circumstance.
What I'm Taking Into Today
I finished my coffee. The light shifted. The day started moving the way days do.
But I kept that verse close — not like armor exactly, more like a reminder tucked in a pocket. Something to reach for when the friction picks up and I start compiling that mental list of things working against me.
If God is for us.
He is. That's the whole thing, really. He just is.
A Prayer for Today
God, thank You for being for me. Not because I've earned it — I haven't, not even close — but because that's just who You are.
Help me actually believe it today. Not just know it the way I know my zip code, but feel it in the ordinary moments when I forget and start doing the math wrong again.
When things feel stacked against me, remind me what the real equation is. You're on my side. That's not nothing. That's everything.
Help me live like it.
Amen.
