Why simple designs often feel the most refined

A cozy moment

October has a way of settling things down. The light gets softer, the air has some weight to it, and I find myself drawn to things that feel straightforward and real. A good wool scarf. A table runner with a clean stripe. A bag that doesn't need explaining.

I noticed this again recently while I was finishing up a small batch of table runners. The pattern was one of the simpler ones I work with — two colors, an even weave, nothing added for the sake of adding. And I kept thinking: this one just holds itself well. It doesn't compete with the bowl of apples on the table or the candle someone lit on a Tuesday afternoon. It just belongs there.

I think that's the thing about simple design. It doesn't ask much of you. It sits in the room without demanding attention, and somehow that's what makes it feel considered. There's a kind of confidence in restraint — like whoever made it knew exactly what they wanted and stopped there, instead of piling on more to prove the point.

I've made pieces with a lot going on — lots of color, layered texture, bold pattern — and some of those I love deeply. But the ones people tend to hold onto for years, the ones that get pulled out every fall and feel right again, are usually the simpler ones. A warm neutral. A single accent thread. A shape that works without ornamentation.

There's something almost generous about that kind of design. It leaves room for the life happening around it. The cluttered counter, the mismatched chairs, the family dinner that doesn't look like a magazine spread — a simple piece doesn't judge any of that. It just fits in, quietly doing its part.

I think about this in terms of faith sometimes, too. The things that last tend to be the things without pretense. Honest materials, honest making, honest purpose. There's a kind of integrity in a piece that is exactly what it looks like — no tricks, no shortcuts hidden under fringe or embellishment.

This October, I've been leaning into that. Pulling out the patterns that feel settled. Working with colors that remind me of dried leaves and raw linen and the inside of a good coat. Nothing trendy. Just things I genuinely like making and that I think will still feel right in ten years.

If any of that resonates with you, I'd love for you to take a look at what's currently in the shop. Everything there is handmade with this in mind — pieces built around the idea that everyday beauty doesn't have to shout.

And I'll leave you with this: think about the things in your home or your wardrobe that you reach for most often. My guess is they're not the most complicated ones. What is it about them that keeps drawing you back?
