Most content about Etsy Ads is either too vague to be useful or written by someone selling a course about Etsy Ads. I’ve read a lot of both.

What I couldn’t find was a real shop owner publishing their actual campaign data — specific ROAS by listing, exact spend, honest accounting of what failed — for a niche product line with a specific buyer.

I’m a design and science-themed shop selling to the HBCU community and Greek life members. My products include table runners, metal wall art letters, architectural bookends, and digital tools for other creators. I started running Etsy Ads on July 4, 2026, with no prior campaign history. Here’s everything I tracked across the first 90 days.

The Setup

Shop: ArtInScienceDesigns on Etsy, open since 2021
Catalog size at launch: approximately 346 active listings
Categories advertised: Table runners, metal wall art letters, architectural bookends, jerseys, kimonos, handbags, digital downloads
Daily budget ceiling: $50 (actual daily spend ranged $3–$10)
Starting strategy: Greater Visibility on all listings
Launch date: July 4, 2026
Prior ad history: None
Prior conversion history: Some organic sales across multiple categories, strongest in table runners and digital downloads

I turned ads on with no filtering — every listed product in multiple sections running simultaneously. This was the first and most expensive mistake.

What Didn’t Work

Kimonos: 9 listings, 1 total lifetime sale, zero ad conversions. Paused all ads within the first two weeks.

Handbags and totes: 9 listings, zero lifetime sales total. Paused.

Most jersey listings: 18 listings total, only one jersey (FAMU) converted through ads. Most jersey listings generated 0% click-through rates — buyers were seeing them in search results and scrolling past without clicking. The problem: ghost mannequin product photos against plain backgrounds. HBCU jersey buyers are making an identity purchase and need to see the shirt in a game day context, not a studio context.

Birth Month Flower Paint-by-Number: $6.10 spent, 26 clicks, zero conversions. One of the clearest examples of a listing conversion problem — buyers were interested enough to click but something on the listing page lost them every time.

Mockup Vestido Mujer (Spanish-language mockup template): $2.48 spent, 9 clicks, zero conversions. An audience mismatch — Spanish-language content appearing to buyers who weren’t the intended audience for it.

What I’d Do Differently From Day One

  • ✓Turn on ads selectively, not universally. Running every listing from the start burned budget generating data on products that common sense should have told me weren’t ready. Before turning on ads, every listing should pass a basic check: does it have at least some organic conversion history? Is it priced above $30? Does the thumbnail show the product in context?
  • ✓Switch strategies correctly and immediately. Etsy offers three ad strategies: Greater Visibility for testing, Efficient Spending for proven converters, and Lower click cost for seasonal parking. Every time a listing converts through ads, switch it to Efficient Spending that same day.
  • ✓Act on 0% CTR listings within 14 days. Any listing with 100+ views and under 1% click-through rate has told you something conclusive about its thumbnail. I let some listings run for 6+ weeks at 0.3–0.8% CTR before pausing them. The data was clear after two weeks.
  • ✓Start the lifestyle photo process before starting ads. My biggest mistake was running ads on listings with product-only photos and hoping conversion would happen anyway. For every cultural identity product in the shop, a lifestyle photo should exist before a dollar of ad spend is allocated.

What’s Next

The campaign enters its highest-demand period in October — HBCU homecoming season peaks between October 10–18 across major schools. Four HBCU colorway runners are now on Efficient Spending with confirmed conversion history. Greek letter ornaments and Roman numeral letter art are new additions entering the campaign with the algorithmic credibility the campaign’s conversion history has built.

The Meta ads test launches October 1 — $5–7 per day directly through Meta Business Manager, targeting HBCU alumni and Greek life interest audiences. If external traffic from Meta converts to Etsy sales at 3x ROAS or better, it earns further investment. If it doesn’t perform, Etsy Ads remain the primary paid channel.

The free shipping conversion is in place across all physical products. The Faire wholesale storefront is live for retail buyers. The blog series continues.

If you’re running Etsy Ads on a niche product, the one thing I’d want you to take from 90 days of data is this: your best products and your best buyer will show themselves in the data if you watch it closely enough. The ads don’t create demand. They reveal it.
