The Thing About Wisdom Is That It Gets Lonely Sitting Still | A Neighborly Tip

A neighborhood community moment

I noticed something at a neighborhood block party a few summers ago. One of the older women on our street — she's been here since before most of us were born — spent the whole afternoon sitting with a young woman who had just moved in. Not giving speeches. Not handing out advice in big formal chunks. Just talking, with her hands wrapped around a paper cup of lemonade, telling stories about what this street used to feel like. The younger woman leaned in the whole time. I remember thinking: that's it. That's the whole thing right there.

Starting a mentorship program in a neighborhood or community group doesn't have to look like a corporate initiative with sign-up sheets and intake forms. I think the simplest version is just creating a structure that gives people permission to do what they already want to do — sit with each other, share what they know, and feel less alone in whatever season of life they're in. A monthly coffee pairing. A bulletin board where people can write one thing they're learning and one thing they'd love to learn. Even something that small gives wisdom somewhere to go, and gives curiosity somewhere to land.

There's something I keep coming back to when I think about mentorship — it's not really about the mentor having all the answers. It's about two people agreeing that the other one is worth their time. That kind of mutual regard is quietly rare, and I think communities that build it intentionally end up with something money genuinely cannot buy. If your neighborhood or group has been feeling a little thin lately, a little surface-level, I'd follow that instinct that says maybe what's missing isn't another event, but a reason for two very different people to sit down together and actually talk.
