The Month I Stopped Ignoring October and Watched My Bookings Fill Up

I used to treat October like a holding pattern — a gap between summer guests and the holiday rush. The property looked fine. Nothing was wrong, exactly. It just looked the same in October as it did in July, and I think that was the problem.

The first time I made a deliberate effort to dress the space for fall, I had three inquiries in one week from people specifically mentioning the photos. One guest said she booked because it looked "cozy and like autumn actually lives there." That stuck with me. She wasn't looking for a neutral, ready-for-anything rental. She wanted to feel the season before she even arrived.

I'm not talking about anything elaborate. What I changed was small: a wreath on the door, some deeper-toned textiles on the couch, a candle or two, and a few pieces of wall art that leaned into that warm, harvest-time feeling. The art is what I'd underestimated. A well-chosen print does something a throw blanket can't — it signals intention. It says someone thought about this space.

I started keeping a small rotation of seasonal prints that I swap in and out, and honestly, it's become one of my favorite parts of managing the property. Right now I'm using a couple of pieces from this listing in my Etsy shop — nature-inspired art that fits October without screaming Halloween. It photographs well, which matters more than people think. Guests are booking from thumbnail images half the time.

There's something I genuinely enjoy about this seasonal rhythm — rotating pieces in and out, refreshing the space without renovating it. It feels a little like tending something. I think that's part of what guests pick up on, even if they can't name it. A space that's been cared for feels different from one that's just been cleaned.

If you've been treating the fall months like filler on your calendar, I'd just say — I used to do the same thing, and the shift for me was simpler than I expected. It didn't take a redesign. It took paying attention to what the season actually looks like and letting the space reflect it.

October has been some of my best booking months since I started doing this. I don't think that's a coincidence.

I made something that goes with this: Etsy Listing Decision Digital PDF Guide, a digital download on Gumroad. (It's also in my Etsy shop.)
