The Genius of Paying for Babysitting With Hours Instead of Dollars | A Neighborly Tip

A neighborhood community moment

I noticed something a little funny the first time I sat with my neighbor Denise's kids so she and her husband could go to a dinner they'd been putting off for three months. She didn't hand me anything when she got home. No cash, no Venmo notification, no awkward moment of refusing a twenty. She just added a little tally mark to the shared notebook on her refrigerator — the one that lives next to a handwritten list of who's in the co-op and how many hours each family has banked. That notebook, honestly, might be the most quietly radical thing on her street.

A babysitting co-op is exactly what it sounds like: a small circle of families who agree to watch each other's kids, trading time instead of money. Someone keeps track — usually with a simple point system, one point per hour — so nobody feels like they're always giving and nobody feels like they're always taking. I think what makes it work, more than the logistics, is that it requires you to actually know your neighbors well enough to trust them with your children. That's not a small thing. Most of us will loan a cup of sugar without a second thought, but handing over a four-year-old is a different kind of trust entirely. The co-op almost forces that relationship into being.

Starting one doesn't take much — four or five families, a shared document or that notebook, and one honest conversation about expectations. I'd say the hardest part isn't the organizing. It's letting yourself need the help in the first place, and then letting yourself be the help for someone else. There's something in that exchange that feels, to me, a lot like what community is actually supposed to be — not a neighborhood full of politely waving strangers, but people who are genuinely woven into each other's ordinary weeks.
