Doing behind-the-scenes work that never makes the highlight reel
Doing behind-the-scenes work that never makes the highlight reel
There's a particular kind of steady hum beneath the surface of most successes, isn't there? I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately, especially as June brings its usual busy rhythm of longer days and new growth. The world outside is bursting with green, everything moving at a faster clip, and I find myself, as always, keeping a lot of plates spinning that no one really sees.
It’s a specific kind of work, the kind that never quite makes it into the glossy photos or the triumphant recap emails. You know the stuff: the hours spent untangling a system so someone else’s big presentation looks flawless; the patient listening to a grown child navigate a tricky decision, offering silent support that predates their birth; the endless cycle of meal planning, grocery runs, and laundry that keeps a home running smoothly, day in and day out.
The Invisible Threads
In my professional life, I see it all the time. I'll spend days organizing data, refining processes, or troubleshooting a glitch that would bring a project to a halt. When the project launches or the report goes out, it’s the flashy graphics or the compelling conclusions that get the attention. And that's fine, truly. The goal was for it to succeed, not for me to be applauded for the nitty-gritty.
At home, it’s much the same. My husband might grill a fantastic dinner, and everyone raves. While he’s certainly put in the work, I’ve often spent hours orchestrating the side dishes, ensuring dietary needs are met, and making sure the kitchen is mostly clean before, during, and after. It's the silent machinery that allows the "highlight reel moment" to actually happen.
Even with our adult child, who’s forging her own path, there are still those behind-the-scenes moments. A text at midnight, a phone call dissecting a work problem. It's not the active parenting of years past, but it's still being the constant, reliable presence, the safe harbor. It’s part of the ongoing, unseen architecture of love and support.
Sitting with the Unseen
It can feel a little… paradoxical, sometimes. To know you’re indispensable to the smooth operation of things, yet largely invisible in the recounting of them. It’s not about wanting a medal or needing constant praise. It’s more about the odd sensation of being the bedrock, the foundation, with all the exciting structures built on top. And the structures get the photos.
I often find myself reflecting on faith during these times. There’s a verse in Matthew 6:6 that comes to mind: "But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you." While it speaks directly to prayer, it's about more than just prayer to me; it's about the deep comfort that there’s a divine perspective that sees every single thread, every quiet effort, every seemingly insignificant task that contributes to the whole.
It offers a grounding for those moments when the human world only sees the finished product. To know that nothing is truly wasted, no effort unobserved, in the grander scheme of things. It allows me to sit with that feeling of being unseen by humans, without it turning into bitterness or resentment. It just… is. And it’s okay.
The Unsung Harmony
So, here we are in early summer, and the world is moving fast. There’s a lot to do, a lot to keep track of, and plenty of moments that won’t ever be captured for an Instagram post or a company newsletter. These are the moments of quiet effort, the steady hands, the thoughtful intentions that hold life together.
Perhaps you know this feeling too, this rhythm of living where so much of what you do is the scaffolding, the deep roots, the intricate network that allows everything else to flourish. It’s not always glamorous, but it is undeniably essential. Doesn't it feel good to name it, even just to ourselves?
