Daily Prayer: You Don't Have to Walk Into That Room Alone
Daily Prayer: You Don't Have to Walk Into That Room Alone
"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you."
— Deuteronomy 31:6
I was stirring my coffee this morning — probably the third time I'd stirred it, honestly, because I kept forgetting I'd already done it — and I noticed my hand had that little tension in it. You know the one. Not quite a grip, not quite a fist. Just the kind of hold you get when something is sitting at the edge of your mind and you haven't quite named it yet.
There's a meeting today. Nothing catastrophic. Just one of those situations where I'll need to say something I'd rather not say, in front of people I respect, and hope it lands okay. The professional version of walking into a room and hoping your skirt isn't tucked into your tights.
The Verse I Keep Coming Back To
Deuteronomy 31:6 is one of those verses I've had memorized for years, but every so often it catches me off guard again — like running into an old friend at the grocery store and realizing how much you'd missed them.
Be strong and courageous.
I think what strikes me most is that this wasn't said to someone who had it all together. Moses was saying it to a whole nation of people who were scared — genuinely, legitimately scared — about what was ahead of them. God wasn't dismissing the fear. He was just saying: I'll be right there. Don't let the fear make the decision for you.
That feels different from a pep talk. A pep talk tells you that you've got this. This verse tells you that He's got this — and also you — and that changes the equation considerably.
The Ordinary Bravery Nobody Really Talks About
My daughter called last night, just to chat. She's an adult now, doing her own adult things in her own adult life, and sometimes I'm still a little surprised by how good she is at it. We talked about something she's nervous about too — a conversation she's been putting off, a thing she knows she needs to do but keeps finding excellent reasons to delay.
I told her what I know to be true: the waiting is almost always worse than the doing.
And then I went to bed and lay awake thinking about my own meeting. So. That's humbling.
My husband was already asleep, which I find both annoying and deeply admirable. He has this gift for deciding that tomorrow's problems belong to tomorrow, and then actually believing it. I married that quality on purpose, I think, even if I didn't know it at the time.
He Goes With You
The part of this verse that I keep landing on today is the middle bit: for the Lord your God goes with you.
Not ahead of you to clear the path. Not behind you to catch you if you fall. With you. Present tense. Into the room. Into the conversation. Into the moment where your voice might shake a little and you say the thing anyway.
I find that genuinely comforting in a way that's hard to explain without sounding like a bumper sticker, but I'll try: it means I don't have to be impressive. I just have to show up. The weight of the outcome isn't entirely mine to carry.
That's not a small thing to know on a morning when your hand is doing the tension-grip around a coffee mug.
What I'm Actually Praying For
I'm not praying for the meeting to go perfectly. I've learned — slowly, the hard way — that "perfectly" is usually not the goal God is working toward anyway. He seems far more interested in faithful than flawless.
I'm praying for the courage to say the true thing clearly, with kindness, and then let it be whatever it's going to be.
And I'm praying the same for my daughter, and her delayed conversation, and everyone else who woke up today with a little tension in their hands and something hard sitting at the edge of their mind.
He goes with all of us. That's a lot of rooms He's walking into today. I think He's up for it.
A Prayer for Today
Lord, You already know about the meeting. You already know about the thing I've been half-dreading since I put it on my calendar. You were there when I stirred my coffee three times and didn't notice.
I'm not asking You to make it easy. I'm asking You to go with me — which You've already promised to do, so I guess I'm really just asking You to help me remember that.
Help me be brave in the ordinary way — not the dramatic kind, just the kind where I say what needs to be said and trust You with what comes next. Help me be kind while I'm doing it. Help me not rehearse it seventeen more times in the car on the way there.
And thank You. For not leaving. For the husband who can sleep through anything and the daughter who calls just to talk and the coffee that's still warm. I notice those things. I think they're from You.
Amen.
