Daily Prayer: You Are Worth More Than Many Sparrows

Daily Prayer: You Are Worth More Than Many Sparrows

A quiet moment of reflection

"Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows."
— Luke 12:6-7

There was a little bird hopping around near the back steps this morning. Nothing special — just a small brown one, the kind you'd never bother to photograph. It pecked at something invisible in the concrete crack, found it satisfying apparently, and moved on.

I watched it longer than made sense.

The Ones Nobody Counts

Jesus chose sparrows on purpose. Not eagles. Not the birds people write poems about. He picked the ones that came five for two pennies — the bulk discount birds, the ones so common they barely registered as currency.

And He said: God has not forgotten a single one.

I find that almost unreasonably comforting.

Because most of my days are sparrow days. Coffee made, lunches packed (well — for myself now, which still feels a little odd), emails sent, dinner figured out, husband checked in with, laundry moved from one place to another in its slow, eternal migration. Nothing that makes the highlight reel. Nothing that anyone would count.

But apparently Someone is counting.

The Hairs on My Head (Bless His Heart)

I have to smile at that part about the hairs. Because I've been finding mine in increasingly dramatic quantities on the bathroom floor, and I think it's generous of God to keep tracking them as they make their exit.

But that's kind of the whole point, isn't it? The specificity of it. Not a vague, celestial awareness of humanity in general — but actual, particular attention to you. The details of you. The ones you'd never think to mention because they don't seem worth mentioning.

God is not keeping a broad eye on the general direction of things. He is paying close attention to the specific, unremarkable, wonderful details of your actual life.

What "Don't Be Afraid" Sounds Like From a Friend

My grown kid called the other night, not because anything was wrong, just to talk. We ended up on the phone for an hour about nothing in particular — a show they're watching, a coworker who's a lot, what they've been making for dinner.

That's the kind of attention Luke 12 is describing, I think. Not crisis management. Just — I see you. I know what's going on with you. The ordinary stuff included.

"Don't be afraid" lands differently when it comes from someone who actually knows what's happening in your life. Not a pep talk from a stranger. A word from someone who's been paying attention all along.

Worth More Than Many Sparrows

I want to sit with that phrase without rushing past it.

Not "worth something" — worth more. Not "noticed sometimes" — never forgotten. The scale of God's attention to us is, frankly, a little staggering when you let yourself think about it.

That small brown bird hopped off the step and disappeared into the yard. Forgotten by me within the hour, honestly.

Not by God.

And if that unremarkable little creature is held in that kind of awareness — what does that say about how God sees us? About how He sees you, reading this, in the middle of your own perfectly ordinary morning?

I think it says: you are seen. Fully, specifically, tenderly seen. And there is nothing to be afraid of.

A Prayer for Today

God, thank You for the sparrows. Thank You for paying attention to things I would overlook, including, on some days, myself.

I want to believe this — that You know me this well, this specifically, and that knowing me this well, You're still not worried. That "don't be afraid" isn't dismissive. It's just the truth, from someone who actually knows the whole picture.

Help me carry that today. Not in a way I have to perform or announce — just quietly in the back of my mind, the way you carry something you know is true. That I'm seen. That nothing about my life is too small for Your attention.

That I am worth more than many sparrows, and You meant it.

Amen.
