Daily Prayer: Whether I Live or Die, I'm Already His
"If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord."
— Romans 14:8
I was rinsing out a coffee mug this morning — the one with the slightly chipped handle that I keep meaning to replace and somehow never do — and I noticed that I was humming. Not anything intentional. Just a little thread of melody that had somehow started without my permission.
I stood there for a second, water still running, and thought: this is my life. Chipped mugs. Humming without knowing it. The ordinary turning over and over like a load of laundry, warm and familiar.
And I felt genuinely good about that.
A Verse That Doesn't Ask Very Much — and Everything
Romans 14:8 is one of those verses that reads simply at first. Short sentences. Plain words. We live for the Lord. We die for the Lord. We belong to the Lord.
But then you sit with it a little longer, and it starts to open up in a way that's almost startling.
It doesn't say: if you do important things for the Lord. It doesn't say: if you serve in big ways, speak on stages, or accomplish something worth writing home about.
It says if we live. Full stop. The living itself is for Him.
Which means the coffee mug counts. The humming counts. The answering of emails and the making of grocery lists and the texting back and forth with my adult kid about something completely inconsequential — it all counts, because I belong to Him while I'm doing all of it.
What Belonging Actually Feels Like
I've been a Christian long enough to know that "belonging to God" can start to sound like a concept rather than a reality if you're not careful. It can get filed away next to other true things that somehow stop landing.
But lately I keep coming back to the word belong specifically. Not serve. Not obey. Not even follow — though all of those are also true.
Belong.
Belonging implies a relationship that doesn't depend on my performance in any given moment. I belong to my husband — not because I'm always my best self around him, but because we chose each other and we're woven together now. I belong to my kid — not because parenting was always graceful (it was not), but because that bond runs deeper than any single moment of getting it right or wrong.
That's the picture Paul is painting here, I think. You're His. That's already settled. Now go live — really live — inside of that truth.
The Freedom Hidden in That
There's something almost relieving about a verse that covers both ends of the spectrum so completely. Whether we live or die.
He's not waiting to see which way it goes before He claims us. He already has. The outcome doesn't change the belonging.
I find that genuinely comforting in a way that doesn't feel like a bumper sticker. It's more like... settling into a chair that you know will hold your weight. You don't have to keep checking. You can just sit.
So I can hum over the chipped mug. I can take the long way home from work because I like the way the light looks on that particular stretch of road. I can linger in a conversation with my husband about something neither of us will remember in a week. I can send my kid a ridiculous meme at an unreasonable hour.
None of it is too small for a life lived for the Lord. Because it's my life, and I'm His.
The Part I'm Still Learning
I'll be honest: I don't always feel this settled. Some days I slip into thinking that belonging to God requires a certain level of spiritual productivity — that I should be doing more, praying longer, showing up bigger somehow.
And then a verse like this one comes along and sort of gently corrects me. Not harshly. More like a hand on the shoulder. Hey. You're already His. Just live. I'll be here in all of it.
I think that's the invitation I keep accepting, imperfectly and gladly, over and over again.
A Prayer for Today
God, thank You for a verse that covers the whole thing — the living and the dying and everything in between. I belong to You. I want to actually feel that today, not just know it as a fact. Help me live like it's true while I'm doing the small stuff — the ordinary Tuesday-ish things that make up most of a life. I don't want to wait for something significant before I remember I'm Yours. I want to remember it over the coffee mug. In the car. In the middle of a conversation that doesn't matter much and also kind of does. You're in all of it. I'm Yours in all of it. That's enough. That's more than enough. Amen.
