Daily Prayer: Take Heart — He's Already Won
Daily Prayer: Take Heart — He's Already Won
"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
— John 16:33
I was rinsing out my coffee mug this morning — one of those small, automatic acts you do without thinking — when I noticed the light coming through the kitchen window at just the right angle. It caught the steam rising off the hot water and made it look almost golden.
I stood there for a second longer than necessary. Just looking at it.
Nobody needed anything from me in that exact moment. The house was doing its ordinary hum. And I thought, almost without meaning to: this is enough. This is actually really good.
The Verse Jesus Didn't Have to Say Out Loud
John 16:33 is one of those verses that gets cross-stitched onto pillows and printed on coffee mugs, and I understand why. It's short. It's memorable. It lands.
But I think we sometimes skip over the first part in our rush to get to the "take heart" section.
Jesus says: I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace.
He's not promising the absence of hard things. He's saying — I'm telling you all of this ahead of time, specifically so you won't be caught off guard. So you'll have somewhere solid to stand when the ground gets unsteady.
That's not a pep talk. That's a friend who loves you enough to tell you the truth before you need it.
Trouble Is Part of the Deal
I appreciate that Jesus doesn't soften this. He doesn't say "you might encounter some challenges" or "life can be hard sometimes." He says: in this world, you will have trouble. Full stop.
There's something almost relieving about that kind of honesty.
Because I've had trouble. Real stuff — the kind that sits heavy on your chest at 2 a.m. And I've also had the smaller, persistent kind: the work deadline that piles on top of a difficult conversation with my adult kid, the logistical juggle of two full lives lived under one roof with my husband, the low hum of worry that follows a person around like a loyal but unhelpful dog.
None of that surprises Jesus. He named it first.
What "Take Heart" Actually Sounds Like
I think "take heart" is one of those phrases that can sound a little hollow if you're not careful. Like being told to cheer up. Which, as we all know, has never once made anyone cheer up.
But in context, it's different.
Jesus says it right after telling us He has overcome the world. Past tense. Already done. Not "I'm working on it" or "I'm hoping to" — but finished. Complete. The battle He's inviting us to rest in is one He already won.
So "take heart" isn't cheerful advice. It's more like someone grabbing your hand and saying — hey. I know. And it's already okay.
I find that genuinely steadying.
The Peace That Lives in Ordinary Moments
My life right now is full in the best way. Good work I care about. A marriage that has gotten richer and more comfortable with time — the kind where you can be in separate rooms doing separate things and still feel close. A kid who is grown and finding her own way, which is its own particular joy, the kind with a little bit of bittersweet woven in.
And in the middle of all that good ordinary life, trouble still shows up. It always does. A hard phone call. A situation at work that doesn't resolve neatly. News from the world outside that lands heavier than expected.
But I keep coming back to this verse. Not as a fix, exactly. More like a hand on my shoulder.
He told us ahead of time. He overcame it. And He invites us — right in the middle of the steam rising from the sink and the golden light and the ordinary Tuesday hum of everything — to have peace.
I'm going to keep taking Him up on that.
A Prayer for Today
Lord,
Thank You for telling me the truth. For not sugarcoating it, and for not leaving me in it alone.
Today there are things I'm carrying that feel bigger than I want them to. You know what they are. You already knew before I sat down to write this.
Help me to actually rest in the fact that You've already overcome. Not just to say it, but to feel it settle somewhere in my chest and stay there.
And help me to notice the good things — the light through the window, the warmth of a mug, the ordinary goodness You keep tucking into regular days. I don't want to miss those.
I trust You. Even when I'm still working up to trusting You. You know the difference and You love me anyway.
Amen.
