Daily Prayer: Staying the Course When No One's Keeping Score
Daily Prayer: Staying the Course When No One's Keeping Score
"To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger."
— Romans 2:7-8
I was folding a load of laundry this morning — my husband's work shirts, mostly — when I noticed I was doing it carefully. Not just stuffing them in a pile. Actually folding the sleeves flat, the way he likes them.
Nobody asked me to. Nobody was watching. He was already at work. And honestly, I almost didn't. There was a perfectly good "just get it done" version of that task available to me.
But I did it the careful way. And I stood there for a second thinking about that.
The Ordinary Version of Persistence
Romans 2:7 talks about persistence in doing good. My brain immediately jumps to something dramatic — someone enduring hardship, staying faithful under pressure, holding the line when everything falls apart.
And sure. That's part of it.
But I think persistence also looks like folding the shirts right when no one's home. It looks like answering a work email with actual care instead of just technically answering it. It looks like texting my adult daughter back promptly even when I'm tired, because she matters and I want her to feel that.
It's the small, repeated choices. The ones nobody gives you a gold star for.
Self-Seeking Is Sneaky
The contrast in verse 8 is what gets me. Self-seeking. That phrase is so much more convicting than something obvious like "doing evil," because self-seeking is subtle. It's the version of doing things that's technically fine but quietly motivated by what I get out of it.
I notice it in myself sometimes — the way I can do something generous and also, somewhere in the back of my mind, wonder if anyone noticed. Or the way I can be kind in a moment and then feel vaguely resentful that it didn't get acknowledged.
That's not the same as genuine goodness. That's goodness with a receipt, waiting to be redeemed.
Paul draws a pretty clear line here. And I appreciate that he doesn't dress it up.
Seeking the Right Things
What I find interesting about this verse is that it doesn't say "seek nothing." It says seek glory, honor, and immortality — but seek them through persistence in doing good.
That's not a prohibition on wanting things. It's a redirection of what we're aiming for, and how we get there.
I think about that in the context of my work, my marriage, my relationship with my daughter now that she's grown. I still want things. I want to do work that matters. I want a marriage that's genuinely good, not just functional. I want my daughter to know she's loved without conditions.
Those are real wants. And the path to all of them is the same: keep showing up and doing the right thing, even when it's just folding the shirts.
The Long Game
Eternal life as a reward for persistence sounds almost too simple. Like, surely there's more to it than just... keep going?
But I think that's actually what makes it hard. Not complicated — just long. Persistence isn't a single heroic act. It's the accumulated weight of a thousand ordinary moments where you chose well, or tried to, or got it wrong and tried again the next day.
I find that strangely encouraging. Not because it's easy, but because it means today counts. This ordinary day, with its laundry and work emails and texts to my kid — it counts.
That's not nothing. That's actually everything.
A Prayer for Today
God, I want to do good today without keeping score. That's harder than it sounds, and You know that better than I do.
Help me notice when I'm doing the right thing for the wrong reason — when I'm more interested in the credit than the act itself. Gently, if possible. I respond better to gentle.
Thank You that this verse doesn't demand perfection. Just persistence. Just keep going. Keep choosing good. I can work with that.
I want to seek the things that actually last. Help me remember what those are, especially on the days when something smaller and shinier is right there in front of me.
Today's a good day to do one small thing well, for no reason other than it's the right thing to do. I'll start there.
Amen.
