Daily Prayer: Rooted in Him, Right Where You Are

A quiet moment of reflection

"So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness."
— Colossians 2:6-7

My coffee was still hot when I sat down this morning. That almost never happens.

I noticed it the way you notice a small gift — not with fanfare, just a little internal nod of appreciation. Hot coffee, a few minutes before the day fully started, my Bible open on the table next to my phone (which I was determinedly not looking at yet).

It was such an ordinary moment. And yet it felt like exactly the right place to be.

The Part Nobody Talks About Enough

When I first came to faith, there was a lot of energy around the beginning of it. The receiving, the turning, the yes. And that moment was real and it mattered deeply.

But Colossians 2:6-7 is about what comes after that. The continuing. The staying rooted. The being built up — slowly, quietly, over years of ordinary mornings with ordinary coffee.

I think that's the part that doesn't get enough attention.

We talk a lot about the moment of faith. We don't always talk about what it looks like on a regular workday, when you've got a full inbox and a husband who can't find his keys and a grown kid texting you a question you weren't expecting at 8 a.m.

That's where the rooted part actually gets tested. Not dramatically. Just steadily.

What "Rooted" Actually Feels Like

I've been married long enough that my husband and I have our rhythms. We know how the other person takes their coffee. We know which conversations to have at dinner and which ones to save for the weekend. That kind of knowing took years of small, consistent moments layered on top of each other.

I think being rooted in Christ works similarly. It's not one big thing. It's the accumulation of a lot of small faithfulness — Bible open on the table, a prayer said honestly rather than perfectly, a Sunday morning chosen over sleeping in, a habit of returning even when I've drifted a little.

The verse says "rooted and built up." Both things. Anchored deep and also growing upward. I like that picture. A tree doesn't have to choose between those two things — it does both at once, without any drama about it.

Overflowing With Thankfulness (Even Before 9 A.M.)

The last phrase in that verse is the one that caught me this morning: overflowing with thankfulness.

Not just thankful. Overflowing with it.

I'll be honest — that's an aspirational description on most days. I'm usually more in the "genuinely grateful but also slightly preoccupied" category.

But hot coffee at the right moment has a way of resetting something in me. So does a text from my kid that's funny instead of stressful. So does a workday that actually goes the way it was supposed to go. So does my husband saying something kind in passing, the way people who have been together a long time sometimes do — casually, without making a big deal of it.

I think thankfulness overflows when I'm paying attention. When I'm actually present in my life instead of half-present and half-somewhere-else in my head.

And I think being rooted in Christ is what makes that kind of attention possible. It's what keeps me from living like everything depends on me to hold it together — because it doesn't, and He's already made that clear.

Continuing to Live in Him

The instruction in this verse isn't complicated. It's just continue.

Keep going. Stay in it. Live your actual life in Him — the work emails and the grocery runs and the conversations with your grown child who is figuring out adulthood in real time (which, for the record, is fascinating to watch).

Don't wait for a more spiritual version of your life to show up. This is the one. These are the days.

I'm finding that the faith I received all those years ago isn't something I completed. It's something I'm still living inside of. And that's not a problem to fix — that's actually the point.

The roots go deeper. The life grows upward. The thankfulness, on a good morning with hot coffee, overflows a little.

I'll take it.

A Prayer

Lord, thank You for the continuing. For the fact that faith isn't a one-time event I'm supposed to have already figured out — but something I get to keep living inside of, day after day.

Help me stay rooted when things are fine and also when things are not. Help me keep showing up to the ordinary moments like they matter, because I think You've made it pretty clear that they do.

I want to be the kind of person who overflows with thankfulness — not just feels it privately and moves on. Help me get there. Probably remind me a few times along the way.

Thank You for hot coffee and good marriages and grown kids who still text their moms. Thank You for a faith that doesn't expire.

I'm still here. Still yours. Still learning.

Amen.
