I noticed something a few years back that I still think about. A retired schoolteacher on my street knew three languages, grew the most extraordinary tomatoes, and had more patience than most people I've ever met — and she spent most of her days feeling like she had nothing left to offer. Meanwhile, two houses down, a young couple was quietly drowning in all the things they didn't yet know how to do. A time bank, I think, is what connects those two households without anyone having to admit they need help or ask for a favor they can't repay.

The idea is simple enough that it almost sounds too simple. One hour of your time equals one hour of someone else's time, regardless of what either of you did with it. A haircut earns the same credit as fixing a leaky faucet. Reading to an elderly neighbor counts just as much as legal advice. There's something almost quietly radical about that — not in a political way, but in the way it insists that everyone's time carries the same weight. I find that genuinely moving, maybe because we don't say that out loud very often in the rest of our lives.

Starting one doesn't require an app or a committee or a laminated sign-up sheet, though those things can help eventually. What it really requires is one or two people willing to say, here's what I can do, and here's what I could use. I think about the teacher with her tomatoes and her three languages, and I wonder how many neighborhoods have someone just like her — full of something worth sharing, waiting for someone to set up a system that makes the asking feel less awkward. That feels like the real work here. Not the logistics. The permission.
