I noticed something a little strange the first time I heard about a Time Bank. The idea is simple enough — one hour of your time equals one hour of someone else's time, no matter what either of you is doing. A retired electrician's hour is worth the same as a college student's hour of tutoring, which is worth the same as a grandmother's hour of teaching someone how to make tamales from scratch. No money changes hands. No one keeps a running tab of who owes whom a favor. There's just this quiet ledger of hours, and somehow it holds a neighborhood together in a way that a casual wave from the driveway never quite manages to do.

I think what I find most interesting about a Time Bank isn't the system itself — it's what the system assumes about people. It assumes that everyone has something worth giving. Not just the neighbors with impressive résumés or useful tools in their garage. Everyone. The person who is good at sitting with someone who is anxious. The person who knows how to parallel park on a hill. The person who makes really, genuinely good soup. A Time Bank says all of that counts, and I find that oddly moving in a world that is very attached to measuring people's worth by their credentials.

Starting one doesn't have to be complicated. I've seen neighborhoods begin with nothing more than a shared spreadsheet and a group chat, just people willing to say out loud what they can offer and what they actually need. There's something almost vulnerable about that, and I think that's exactly the point. When we stop pretending we have it all handled, we leave a little room for someone else to show up. That's not a strategy for community building, really. It's just what community has always been, dressed up in a slightly more organized coat.
