I noticed something at the last potluck on our street. The woman who almost didn't come — the one who showed up with a foil-covered pan and a slightly apologetic look — ended up standing in the driveway for two hours talking to people she'd only ever waved at from her car. She'd made her grandmother's macaroni and cheese. Nothing fancy. But three people asked her for the recipe, and somewhere in that exchange, she stopped being "the quiet lady on the corner" and became someone with a name, a story, and a grandmother worth knowing about.

I think that's what a community potluck actually is, underneath all the logistics of who brings what. It's a low-pressure reason for people to stop moving long enough to actually see each other. There's something about food made at home — even the imperfect batch of brownies, even the store-bought rolls someone was too tired to hide in a nicer bowl — that signals a kind of honesty. You're not performing. You're just showing up. And I find that more people are willing to show up when the bar is "bring something" rather than "be impressive."

If you've been thinking about suggesting a potluck to your neighbors and then talking yourself out of it, I'd gently say: the timing is never going to feel perfect, and that's okay. I've found that the simplest invitations — a handwritten note, a group text, a knock on the door — carry more warmth than anything polished. The food is just the excuse. What people are really hungry for, I think, is the feeling that someone nearby actually knows their name.
