I pulled out an old trivia game one Friday evening — the kind with the little wedge-shaped pieces that always go missing — and texted three neighbors with something like, "No pressure, but come over if you want." Two of them showed up. One brought her teenage son, who I had never heard say more than six words in a row. By nine o'clock he was correcting all of us on 1980s pop culture and laughing loud enough to carry down the hallway. That was the moment I understood something I hadn't before: a game gives people permission to just be a little ridiculous together, and ridiculous is sometimes the fastest road to real.

I think what makes a game night work isn't the game itself — it's the low stakes of it all. Nobody has to be impressive. Nobody has to have a clean house or a polished story about their life. There's something almost grace-like about that, a small table where everyone is equally likely to lose. I've noticed that conversations that would never happen over a formal dinner just... happen. Someone mentions their dad while explaining why they know so much about old westerns. Someone else laughs at themselves, and you see them soften a little. I don't plan for those moments. I just try to leave enough room for them.

If I'm being honest, I used to think hosting required more than I had — more space, more snacks, more energy. But a game night taught me that people mostly just want somewhere to be. I keep it simple: a cleared-off table, a few options on the shelf, and something to drink. The rest tends to take care of itself. My instinct now is to do it again soon, maybe before the season changes, before everyone gets busy again. Not because I read somewhere that it builds community — but because I still think about that kid and his laugh, and I'd like to hear it again.
