Daily Prayer: When the Words Finally Open Up

Daily Prayer: When the Words Finally Open Up

A quiet moment of reflection

"The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple."
— Psalm 119:130

I was reading a verse I've seen probably a hundred times when something shifted just slightly — the way light shifts when a cloud moves. Not dramatic. Just suddenly, a little clearer.

I actually set my coffee down. Which, if you know me, is a real indicator that something has my full attention.

The Word "Unfolding" Does a Lot of Work

I've always moved past that word too quickly. Unfolding. I used to read it as a fancy way of saying "reading" — like, the more you read, the more you understand. True, probably. But I don't think that's quite it.

Unfolding is what happens to something that was already there, already whole, just tucked in on itself. A letter. A map. A flower that hasn't opened yet. The information isn't missing — it's just not visible yet.

That's a different kind of patience than I usually bring to my Bible reading, I'll be honest. I tend to show up hoping for something immediate. Something that applies to the exact situation I walked in carrying. And sometimes that happens. But sometimes I sit there and nothing lands, and I close my Bible and go make someone's lunch and think, well, I tried.

What I'm starting to think is that the unfolding is happening even then. Just not always on my schedule.

What "Simple" Actually Means Here

The verse says it gives understanding to the simple. I've always read that a little defensively, like I'm being called out. Oh, the simple. Yes. That's me, apparently.

But I looked it up, because I'm that kind of person. In the Hebrew, the word translated "simple" refers to someone who is open — not naive, not lacking intelligence, but not yet formed in their opinions. Teachable. Pliable. Not hardened.

That reframed it completely for me.

Being simple isn't an insult. It's actually an asset. The people who already have everything figured out — they don't need light. They've already decided what they're looking at.

I want to stay simple in that sense. I think that's worth actually wanting.

The Ordinary Days Are Where This Happens

My life is not particularly dramatic right now, and I mean that as a compliment to my life. I work. I come home. My husband and I make dinner and talk about mostly normal things. Our daughter is grown and out in the world doing her own living, which is wonderful and also occasionally makes me want to text her three times in a row. I mostly resist.

These are the days when I could easily go through the motions with my faith too. Check the box. Read the chapter. Move on.

But I keep noticing that the verses that finally open up for me — the ones where something shifts — they almost always happen in an ordinary moment. Not a crisis. Not a retreat. Just a Tuesday with coffee going lukewarm on the table while I sit there longer than I planned.

I think God is fine with that setting. I think He actually prefers it, because I'm not performing anything. I'm just there.

Light Doesn't Ask You to Be Ready

What I love most about this verse — and I do love it, I've been thinking about it for days now — is that the light comes from the unfolding itself. Not from my effort to understand. Not from having the right commentary or the right seminary degree or the right amount of spiritual maturity.

The words open up, and light comes with them. Like it was stored there, waiting.

I find that incredibly generous. Almost embarrassingly so. I show up half-awake with my coffee, and God says, here, let me show you something.

I want to keep showing up for that. Even on the mornings when nothing seems to happen. Especially then, actually — because something might be unfolding that I just can't see yet.

A Prayer for Today

God, thank You for being patient with how slowly I unfold things too. I come to You with a lot of assumptions about what I already understand, and I think I miss things because of that. Would You keep me open? Not naive — just not hardened. I want to be the kind of person Your words still land on.

Thank You for the moments when something I've read a dozen times suddenly gets clearer. I don't take those for granted. I know they're a gift, not something I earned by reading long enough or hard enough.

Help me keep showing up even when nothing seems to happen. I trust that You're still working in those moments too — that something is still unfolding, even when I can't see it yet.

I love You. Thanks for the light. — Amen.
