Daily Prayer: When What You Want and What God Wants Finally Feel Like the Same Thing
Daily Prayer: When What You Want and What God Wants Finally Feel Like the Same Thing
"Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart."
— Psalm 37:4
I noticed my coffee was still warm when I picked it back up. That almost never happens.
I don't know why that small thing made me feel so settled, but it did. Like the morning had decided to cooperate. I sat there for a second longer than I needed to, just holding the mug, looking out the window at nothing in particular.
It's funny what contentment feels like when it actually shows up. Sometimes it's enormous — answered prayers, big news, moments you knew you'd remember while they were still happening. But a lot of the time, for me, it looks like warm coffee and a window and nothing urgent pulling at me for thirty seconds.
The Verse I Used to Read Wrong
I'll be honest. For a long time, Psalm 37:4 read to me like a transaction. Like a vending machine with a spiritual requirement. Delight in God → receive desired items.
I think I wanted it to be that simple because I had a list. I suspect most of us do.
But the longer I sit with this verse — and I mean actually sit with it, not just highlight it in a pretty color — the more I think the whole point is what happens to the list when you're genuinely delighting in God. It changes. Not because He withholds things from you, but because you start wanting different things. Or wanting the same things for different reasons. Or realizing some things on the list weren't really yours to begin with.
That's not a punishment. That's actually the good part.
What Delight Actually Looks Like on a Regular Day
I'm a working mom. My kid is an adult now, which is its own particular kind of wonder — watching someone you used to buckle into a car seat have opinions about interest rates and make their own dentist appointments. My husband and I have been married long enough that we have a shorthand for almost everything, including the look that means yes, I also heard that, we'll talk about it later.
Life is full. It's good. It's also just... regular. Most of it.
And I think that's exactly where delight has to live, or it doesn't really live anywhere. It has to be able to exist in the ordinary Tuesday of it all — in the commute, in the work meeting that could have been an email, in the dinner that turned out fine but not remarkable, in the text thread with my kid where we mostly send each other memes and occasionally something real sneaks in.
Delighting in God, for me, isn't a separate activity I schedule. It's more like... a posture I'm trying to keep. A way of moving through ordinary things with my attention tilted toward Him instead of toward my own running commentary.
Some days I manage it. Some days my running commentary wins by a landslide.
The Desires Part
Here's what I've noticed: the desires God tends to fulfill aren't always the ones I wrote down. They're often the ones underneath those — the thing I actually meant when I asked for the thing I asked for.
I wanted a career that felt meaningful. What I meant was: I want to feel like my days matter. He's been quietly answering that second one for years in ways I didn't recognize until I looked back.
I wanted my kid to turn out okay. What I meant was: I want to know they're loved and capable and not carrying damage I accidentally gave them. He's been working on that one too — in them, and honestly, in me.
I think He's less interested in the list and more interested in the heart behind it. Which, when I think about it, is exactly what a good father would do.
What I Keep Coming Back To
This verse doesn't promise ease. It promises alignment. And alignment — your wants slowly bending toward what's actually good — is a quieter gift than we're sometimes hoping for, but it turns out to be the more lasting one.
I think about that warm coffee. That small, cooperative moment. I didn't ask for it. I wasn't praying for it. But I noticed it, and I was glad, and for a second everything felt like enough.
That might be the closest I get to delight on a Wednesday morning. And I'm starting to think that's exactly the point.
A Prayer for Today
God, I want to delight in You — and I also want to be honest that some days I'm not totally sure what that means in practice. I'm good at delighting in coffee and the weekend and my people. I'm still learning how to make You the center of that instead of the add-on at the end.
I think You know what I actually want. Better than I do. And I think — I'm trying to trust — that You care about it more than I expect You to.
Help me want what's real. Help me notice the good things You're already doing in the ordinary parts of my day. And when my list is long and my grip on it is tight, help me hold it a little looser.
I trust You with it. Mostly. I'm working on the rest.
Amen.
