Daily Prayer: When Wanting More of God Is the Best Kind of Hungry
"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled."
— Matthew 5:6
I refilled my water glass this morning for the third time before I'd even sat down at my desk, and it occurred to me — the way small things sometimes do — that I am almost never that intentional about anything else.
I was thirsty, so I got up and got water. No hesitation. No wondering if I deserved it or had time for it. Just the need, and then the thing that meets the need.
I've been sitting with Matthew 5:6 ever since.
The Kind of Hungry I Recognize
I know physical hunger pretty well. I also know the particular hunger that comes from a workday that ran long, a to-do list that didn't shrink the way I hoped, and a dinner I'm genuinely looking forward to. That kind of hunger has a shape to it. It's real and it moves you.
Jesus is using that same image here — not as a metaphor to analyze, but as a feeling to recognize. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.
He's not describing people who have righteousness figured out. He's describing people who want it the way you want a glass of cold water when your throat is dry. People who feel the absence of it and move toward it anyway.
I find that genuinely encouraging. Possibly because I am, most days, much more aware of what I'm lacking spiritually than what I've got sorted.
What Wanting More of God Actually Looks Like
I think I used to imagine that hungering for righteousness looked like something dramatic. Long fasting. Hours of prayer. A certain kind of serious, set-apart life that felt far from mine — which includes a commute, a husband I like talking to at the end of the day, and a grown kid who still calls to talk through her decisions, which I love more than I probably let on.
But the more I sit with this verse, the more I think the hunger Jesus is talking about shows up in smaller, quieter ways. (Not quiet as in serene — quiet as in ordinary.)
It looks like noticing when I've said something sharp and actually caring that I did. It looks like reading a passage of Scripture and wanting to understand it, not just get through it. It looks like the moment in a conversation where I could go one direction or another, and something in me pauses — because I want to choose well, not just conveniently.
That wanting? I think that's the hunger He's talking about.
The Promise Is the Part That Gets Me
He says they will be filled.
Not "they might be filled if they try hard enough." Not "they will feel slightly better about themselves over time." Filled. Like a real meal after a long day. Like water when you actually needed it.
I don't think that means everything clicks into place instantly or that righteousness becomes effortless. But I do think it means the longing isn't wasted. The wanting matters to God. The reaching toward Him — even imperfectly, even while also managing a work deadline and remembering to text my daughter back — counts for something.
He doesn't ask us to arrive. He asks us to be hungry.
What I'm Taking Into Today
I think I want to pay attention to the hunger when I feel it — to not rush past those small moments where something in me leans toward God rather than away. Those moments where I want to do right more than I want to do easy.
I'm not going to be dramatic about it. I'm just going to keep filling the glass.
A Prayer for Today
Lord, thank You for this verse — for the fact that You bless the wanting, not just the having.
I'm not always sure what righteousness looks like in the specific details of my specific day. But I think I know what the hunger feels like. That little pull toward You. That moment where I actually care about doing right.
Don't let me rush past that.
Fill me up today — not all at once, necessarily, but steadily. The way a good meal does. The way a full glass of water does when you really needed it.
I'm showing up hungry. I trust that's enough to start.
