Daily Prayer: When God's Promises Feel Solid Beneath Your Feet
Daily Prayer: When God's Promises Feel Solid Beneath Your Feet
"Sovereign Lord, you are God! Your covenant is trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant."
— 2 Samuel 7:28
I was refilling my coffee mug this morning — the one with the small chip on the handle that I keep meaning to replace and never do — and I caught myself just standing there for a second, holding it with both hands like it was something precious.
It's not precious. It's a mug. But the warmth of it was real, and the kitchen was still, and something about that small, ordinary moment made me feel like I was standing on something solid.
I think that's the feeling I'm chasing when I read this verse.
David Knew Something Worth Saying Out Loud
This is David, talking to God after God has just made him an extraordinary promise — that his house, his kingdom, his legacy would be established. Big, sweeping, dynasty-level stuff.
And David's response isn't to immediately ask for more, or to start planning, or even to say thank you in a tidy, formal way.
He just says: You are God. Your covenant is trustworthy. You have promised good things.
That's it. He names what he knows. He says it back to God like he's grounding himself in it. Like he's pressing his feet into the floor and feeling how solid it is.
I find that so human. And so wise.
The Word "Trustworthy" Is Doing a Lot of Heavy Lifting Here
I notice I use the word "reliable" a lot in my regular life. A reliable car. A reliable recipe. My husband, who is, genuinely, the most reliable person I have ever met in my life — which I say with full appreciation and only a little envy, because I am not naturally a reliable person. I am a well-intentioned person, which is a different thing entirely.
But trustworthy is something deeper than reliable. Reliable means it works. Trustworthy means you can rest your weight on it.
David wasn't just saying God shows up on time. He was saying: I can lean into this. I can build on this. This will hold.
That hits differently when you're a person who sometimes lies awake turning things over — not big catastrophic things, just the regular mid-level concerns of a life in motion. Did I handle that conversation well? Is my kid actually okay, or just saying he is? Did I leave something undone at work that's going to catch up with me?
And into that low hum of background wondering, this verse walks in very calmly and says: The covenant is trustworthy.
He Promised Good Things
I want to sit with that phrase for a moment, because I think I sometimes read past it.
Good things. Not just sufficient things. Not just manageable things or things-you-can-endure. Good things.
God promised David good things, and David received that promise and named it back to God out loud. There's something almost childlike about it, in the best way — the way a kid repeats back what you just told them because they want to be sure they heard right and also because saying it out loud makes it more real.
I think I need to do more of that. Just name the good things. Say them back. Not as a gratitude exercise or a spiritual discipline with a name — just as a person who wants to remember what's true.
My son called last week just to talk, not because he needed anything. My husband made dinner without being asked and it was genuinely good. I finished a project at work that I'd been circling for weeks, and when it was done I felt the specific satisfaction of a thing completed.
Good things. Real ones. Already here.
Sovereign Lord, You Are God
That opening line of David's always gets me a little. Sovereign Lord, you are God. It sounds almost redundant — of course God is God — but I think David was doing something important.
He was orienting himself. He was saying: before I say anything else, let me get this right. Let me start from the true thing and build from there.
I want to start my days like that more. Not with my to-do list or my inbox or whatever I half-remember from the night before. Just with: You are God. Your promises hold. You have given me good things.
And then pick up the coffee mug. And go from there.
A Prayer
Lord,
You are God. I want to just start there, like David did — not rushing past it, actually meaning it.
I believe your covenant is trustworthy. I believe it on good days and I'm choosing to believe it on the days when I'm just standing in the kitchen holding a coffee mug and hoping that counts as showing up.
Thank you for the good things. The specific, real, already-here good things. The ones I sometimes walk right past because I'm moving too fast to notice them.
Help me say true things back to you more often. Help me orient myself toward what holds before I reach for what worries me.
You have promised good things to your servant. I'm going to keep saying that until it settles all the way into my bones.
Amen.
