Daily Prayer: When God Fills Your Hands So You Can Open Them
"You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God."
— 2 Corinthians 9:11
I noticed this morning that I have a full coffee canister, a working car, and a kid who texted me back within the hour. Not to brag. Just — I noticed.
It's the kind of thing that used to slide right past me. The full canister, the charged phone, the ordinary machinery of a life that's actually working. I'd look right through it on my way to thinking about whatever needed fixing next.
But lately I've been sitting with this verse from 2 Corinthians, and it's doing something to the way I see my mornings.
Enriched in Every Way
That phrase stopped me cold the first time I really read it. Every way. Not just financially. Not just in the big, obvious categories we'd put on a blessing checklist.
Every way.
Which means time counts. Energy counts. That stretch of good health you're in right now counts. The fact that you know how to cook a decent meal, or that you have a friend who will answer the phone, or that you slept well last night — all of it counts.
Paul isn't writing to wealthy people promising them they'll get wealthier. He's writing to ordinary believers, telling them that God's provision — in all its forms — has a purpose beyond their own comfort.
God fills your hands so you have something to give away.
The Generous Life Looks Pretty Small Up Close
I'll be honest. When I hear the word "generosity," my brain immediately jumps to dramatic gestures. Writing a big check. Going on a mission trip. Doing something that looks, from the outside, like generosity with a capital G.
But I think most of it is much smaller than that. And much more frequent.
It's the dinner I made for my neighbor when she had surgery. It's the afternoon I cleared my schedule to just sit and talk with my daughter — who is grown and wonderful and still needs her mom sometimes, even when neither of us says it out loud like that.
It's the extra patience I had in a meeting this week because I'd slept well and wasn't running on fumes. That's a resource too. Presence is a resource.
I'm learning to see generosity as less of an event and more of a posture. Hands open instead of closed. Paying attention to what I have instead of cataloguing what I'm missing.
And the Thanksgiving Part
Here's the piece that really gets me: Paul says that when we give, thanksgiving flows back to God.
Not to us. To God.
When I bring a meal, the neighbor might thank me — and that's lovely, I won't pretend it isn't — but the deeper current running underneath is that God gets the glory. Because He's the one who gave me the groceries, the energy, the knowing-how-to-make-a-good-soup.
I'm just the hands. And I think I'm okay with that. More than okay, actually. There's something freeing about being the hands and not the source.
What I'm Carrying Into Today
I want to be more aware of what I've been given on any ordinary day. Not in a performative gratitude-journaling way — though I have nothing against that — but in a quiet, eyes-open way.
Full coffee canister. Working car. Kid who texts back.
What can I do with all of this today?
That's the question I'm sitting with. And I think asking it is already a kind of prayer.
A Prayer for Today
Lord,
Thank You for filling my hands. I don't always notice, and I'm sorry for that. Today I want to notice.
Help me see the resources I'm walking past — the time, the energy, the little bits of abundance tucked into a regular day. And then help me actually use them for someone else, without making it a whole thing or waiting until I feel ready.
I want the people around me to feel cared for. And I want You to get the credit, because honestly, You've earned it.
Keep my hands open today. That's really all I'm asking.
