Daily Prayer: He's Not Done With Me Yet
"God who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."
— Philippians 1:6
I was rinsing out my coffee mug this morning when I caught my own reflection in the window above the sink. Not a dramatic moment. The sun was coming through at a low angle, the yard looked a little overgrown, and I had on the same cardigan I wear approximately four days out of seven.
I stood there for a second longer than I needed to.
Not in a sad way — more like the way you pause when something catches your eye and you're not quite sure what you're looking at yet.
A Work in Progress (Literally)
I've been thinking about this verse from Philippians a lot lately. Not because something big is happening — nothing is, really. Work is steady, my husband and I are in a good rhythm, and my daughter, who is fully and wonderfully an adult now, texted me a picture of something funny she saw at the grocery store. That's a whole season of its own, parenting someone who texts you memes instead of needing you to cut the crusts off anything.
Life is just... moving along. And I think that's exactly when this verse hits differently.
Because it's easy to feel like God is doing something in you when everything is dramatic — when you're in crisis, or when something obvious is shifting. But what about the ordinary Wednesday of your life? What about the cardigan and the overgrown yard and the coffee mug?
He Started It — That's the Part I Keep Coming Back To
Paul doesn't say you began a good work. He says God did.
I find that genuinely relieving. Because if it were up to me to start the project, I'd still be making a pros and cons list somewhere. I'm a thinker. I research. I consider. God, apparently, just begins.
And then — here's the part I love — He follows through.
I think about how many things I've started with great enthusiasm that are currently unfinished. A journal from three years ago. A recipe I bookmarked. A plant I was very optimistic about. God is not like that. He is, apparently, a finisher. And He has decided that I am worth finishing.
That's not nothing. That's actually a lot.
What "Completion" Looks Like From Here
I don't think completion means I'll eventually have it all together. I don't think it means I'll stop forgetting things or second-guessing myself or wearing the same cardigan too many days in a row.
I think it means that everything God is doing in me — the patience He's building, the faith He keeps tending, the places where I'm slowly, slowly becoming more like Jesus — none of that gets abandoned. None of it gets set aside because He got busy or bored or distracted by someone else's more impressive story.
He's in it for the long haul. With me. With my very ordinary, cardigan-wearing, mug-rinsing life.
The Reflection in the Window
I think what I saw this morning — standing there longer than I needed to — was just myself. A person who is somewhere in the middle of something God started a long time ago.
Not the beginning. Not the end. Just the middle, where most of life actually happens.
And I think that's okay. More than okay, actually. I think that's the point.
He's not waiting for me to be further along before He keeps working. He's working right here, right now, in the middle of the overgrown yard and the recycled cardigan and the meme from my kid.
I can work with that.
A Prayer for Today
God, thank You for being a finisher. Thank You that this — whatever this ordinary day is — is not outside of what You're doing in me. I don't always feel like a work in progress in a good way. Sometimes I just feel like someone who is running behind and needs a haircut. But You started something here, and You don't walk away from Your own work. I want to trust that more than I do. Help me see the middle of my life as the place You actually show up — not just the dramatic parts. Thank You for the mug and the yard and the kid who texts me funny things. Thank You for not being done with me yet. Amen.
