Daily Prayer: God, Help Me Know the Difference
Daily Prayer: God, Help Me Know the Difference
"Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world."
— 1 John 4:1
I was scrolling through my phone the other night — just mindlessly, the way you do when you're waiting for the pasta water to boil — and I landed on a video of a woman speaking with so much confidence and warmth that I almost hit follow before I even knew what she was actually saying.
That stopped me.
Not in a dramatic way. Just a small pause, a little internal wait. I set the phone down and stirred the pasta instead.
The Voice That Sounds So Sure of Itself
There is something about a confident voice that our brains seem to treat as proof. Like certainty is its own kind of credential. And I get it — I really do. I'm drawn to people who seem to know things. Who speak without hedging every single sentence. After a long day of making a hundred small decisions, someone who sounds absolutely sure of the answer is genuinely appealing.
But 1 John 4:1 has been sitting with me this week in a way I can't shake.
Test the spirits.
Not ignore them. Not assume the worst of them. Just — test them. Hold them up to something true and see what you actually find.
This Is a Life Skill, Not Just a Church Skill
I think about my adult daughter, who is out there in the world now, making her own calls about who to trust and what to believe. She has good instincts. She always has. But the world is genuinely full of voices — spiritual ones, cultural ones, algorithmic ones that have been specifically designed to feel like a friend talking to you.
And I think about myself, honestly. I'm not immune just because I've been around longer. If anything, I've gotten lazier about it. I assume I'll know a bad idea when I see one. I assume my gut is calibrated. I'm not always sure that's true.
My husband and I talked about this over dinner the other night — how easy it is to absorb a worldview without realizing you've done it. Like the frog in the pot. (Yes, that's a cliché. It's a cliché because it keeps being true.)
Testing Doesn't Mean Suspicion
Here's the thing I keep coming back to: John doesn't say distrust every spirit. He says test them. That's a different posture. It's not paranoid. It's not closed off. It's just — thoughtful. Careful in the good way.
I think of it like tasting food before I season it. I'm not assuming the dish is ruined. I'm just checking before I commit.
And the standard John gives isn't complicated. Does this point to Jesus? Does it hold up when I bring it into the light? That's the test. Simple, but not always easy.
What I'm Actually Practicing
Lately I've been trying to slow down the moment between hearing something and believing something. Just a breath. Just enough space to ask: where is this coming from? Who benefits if I accept this as true? Does this align with what I actually know to be good?
I'm not great at it yet. I still get pulled in by a confident voice and a nice aesthetic. But I'm noticing it more. And I think noticing is where most good things start.
The pasta was fine, by the way. I never did go back to that video.
A Prayer for Today
God, I need your help with this one.
There are so many voices. Some of them sound so good. So kind. So sure. And I don't always know how to tell which ones are actually from you and which ones just sound like they might be.
Give me a discerning heart — not a suspicious one, but a careful one. The kind that loves people while still being wise about what I let in. Help me remember what's actually true when I'm surrounded by things that are just confident.
And when I get it wrong — because I will — remind me that you're still holding the whole thing. That my job isn't to be perfect at this. Just faithful. Just paying attention.
Thank you for not leaving me to figure this out alone.
Amen.
