Daily Prayer: Finding Rest in the Shadow of the Almighty

Daily Prayer: Finding Rest in the Shadow of the Almighty

A quiet moment of reflection

"He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.""
— Psalm 91:1-2

I was standing at the kitchen counter this morning, waiting for my coffee to finish brewing, when I noticed the way the light was coming through the window at just the right angle — soft and slightly golden, landing on the corner of the counter in a way that made even the pile of mail look almost pretty.

I just stood there for a second. Not doing anything. Just looking at it.

That doesn't happen often. I'm usually already three mental tabs open into the day before the coffee's even ready. But something about that light made me stop, and in the stopping, I thought about this verse. About shelter. About shadow. About what it actually means to rest in something bigger than yourself.

Shelter Doesn't Mean Absence of Noise

I think I used to imagine spiritual shelter as something that would feel like a silent retreat — all hush and candles and no one asking me where the scissors are.

But that's not really what Psalm 91 is describing, is it?

The shelter of the Most High isn't a place I go when life gets still. It's something I live inside of while life keeps moving — while my husband is telling me about his day, while I'm texting my grown kid to check in, while I'm answering emails at my desk and wondering if I remembered to move the laundry.

The shadow of the Almighty falls over all of it. The ordinary Tuesday-afternoon stuff. The good and the repetitive and the small.

That's actually more comforting to me than the retreat version.

What "Refuge" Feels Like on a Regular Day

My adult child called me the other day just to talk — no crisis, no big news, just to chat while she was driving somewhere. I sat down on the couch and just listened and laughed with her for twenty minutes.

I thought afterward: this is what refuge looks like today. A phone call that didn't need anything from me except my presence. A relationship that's moved into a different, easier season. The gift of an ordinary conversation.

God is in that. I genuinely believe that.

He's also in the work I get to do, in the marriage that's comfortable in the best way — the kind of comfortable that means we can sit in the same room reading different books and call that a good evening. He's in the rhythm of a life that isn't dramatic but is, honestly, really good.

Saying It Out Loud

What strikes me about these two verses is that the psalmist doesn't just feel the truth — he says it. Out loud. "I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge."

There's something intentional about that. It's an act. A decision.

I notice I don't always do that. I believe it, somewhere underneath everything, but I don't always say it — to myself, to God, out into the room. I think the saying of it matters more than I give it credit for.

It's the difference between trusting something quietly in the back of your heart and actually planting a flag. He is my fortress. I trust Him. Said out loud, it feels more settled somehow. More real.

So today, over my coffee and my golden-lit counter and my pile of mail, I'm saying it. He is my refuge. He is my fortress. I trust Him.

That's enough for today.

A Prayer for Today

Lord,

Thank You for being the kind of refuge that doesn't require me to have everything figured out first. I don't have to be in a crisis or a particularly holy mood to come to You — and I'm grateful for that, because most of my life happens in the middle.

I want to actually dwell here, not just visit when things get hard. Help me notice You in the ordinary stuff — in the good conversations, in the light through the kitchen window, in the work that fills my days and the people I get to love.

You are my fortress. I trust You. I'm saying it out loud today because I mean it, and because I think You like hearing it.

Be near today. That's really all I need.

Amen.
