The psychology behind choosing soft vs bold accessories
Something shifts in September. The light comes in at a lower angle, the mornings get that first real bite of cool, and I notice people start reaching for different things. A scarf pulled out of a drawer. A bag in a deeper color. It happens quietly, almost without thinking — and I find that interesting.
I've been making handbags, scarves, and table runners for a while now, and one thing I keep coming back to is how personal the soft-versus-bold question really is. It's not about what's fashionable or what the season "calls for." It's more interior than that.
What I mean by soft and bold
When I say soft, I mean the creams, the dusty mauves, the woven textures that feel almost like a sigh. Accessories that don't announce themselves. They settle into a room or an outfit and make everything feel a little more settled too.
Bold is the deep terracotta scarf. The handbag in a saturated cobalt or an unexpected print. Something that holds its ground and doesn't apologize for being there.
Neither is better. But I think which one we reach for on a given day — or a given season — says something honest about where we are.
The pull toward soft
I've noticed that people tend to reach for softer pieces when they're already carrying a lot. Not as a strategy — just instinct. There's something about a muted, textured piece that doesn't compete for attention. It gives a little breathing room. In September especially, when routines are starting back up and the calendar fills in fast, I think that breathing room matters.
There's also something about soft accessories that feels like a small act of care — the kind you give yourself without making a big deal of it. I think of it a little like rest. Not dramatic, not earned, just necessary.
The pull toward bold
Bold pieces, on the other hand, seem to show up when someone is ready to be seen. Or when they need a little help getting there. I've had customers tell me they bought a bright scarf during a hard stretch — not to perform cheerfulness, but because they needed something external to remind them they were still themselves.
There's real courage in a bold accessory worn without apology. It's a small declaration. I find that kind of thing genuinely moving.
September can carry that energy too — new beginnings, a sense of intention, something to step into. A deep-toned table runner laid out for the first dinner party of fall. A statement bag for the first day back at something.
What I actually think is happening
I don't think we choose accessories based on color theory or psychological frameworks. I think we choose them the way we choose most things that matter — by feel, by some wordless sense of what we need that day.
I believe there's something in us that knows. Call it intuition, call it the Spirit moving in small things — I genuinely think the way we reach for beauty in our everyday lives is worth paying attention to. Not overanalyzing. Just noticing.
When I make a piece, I think about that. I'm not trying to make something for a mood board. I'm trying to make something that will feel like the right thing on an ordinary Tuesday morning in September, when someone opens a drawer and just knows.
