Daily Prayer: When God Gets the Credit for Everything

Daily Prayer: When God Gets the Credit for Everything

A quiet moment of reflection

"LORD, you establish peace for us; all that we have accomplished you have done for us."
— Isaiah 26:12

I was standing at the kitchen counter this morning, finishing the last of my coffee before the workday pulled me in, and I noticed the house was just — still. Not in a dramatic, cinematic way. Just ordinarily still. The kind of still where you can hear the refrigerator hum and the dog shift positions on his bed across the room.

It was a perfectly unremarkable moment. And I stood there thinking: how did I get here? Not in a crisis kind of way. More like genuine wonder.

The Life I Didn't Entirely Build

I've been married long enough that my husband and I have our own rhythms and shorthand and inside jokes that would make zero sense to anyone else. We have an adult kid who texts me memes and also actual meaningful things, sometimes in the same conversation. I have work I care about. A house that is lived-in and real.

And I think I used to believe — at least a little — that I had carefully constructed all of it. That the good parts were the result of my planning, my effort, my choosing well.

Isaiah 26:12 has a gentle way of correcting that particular delusion.

All That We Have Accomplished — You Have Done

"LORD, you establish peace for us; all that we have accomplished you have done for us."

The first time I really sat with this verse, I thought: that's a lot of credit to hand over. Because I did work hard. I did show up. I made real choices that led to real outcomes.

But I think the verse isn't saying my effort was fake. It's saying something more interesting than that. It's saying that the conditions, the grace underneath the effort, the way things held together when they could have easily fallen apart — that was God. The peace that settled in places I expected tension? God. The moments my marriage stayed strong when stress tried to wedge into it? God. The fact that my kid grew into someone I genuinely like talking to? I mean — I showed up, sure. But also: God.

There's something deeply relieving about that, actually.

Peace as Something Established, Not Earned

The word that stays with me is establish. God establishes peace for us. Not loans it to us temporarily. Not rewards us with it when we've performed well enough. Establishes it — like a foundation that was laid before I even got there.

I think about what that means on an ordinary workday, when I'm answering emails and making lunch and texting my husband something mundane about what we're doing for dinner. None of that feels particularly sacred. But peace runs underneath all of it like something solid.

I didn't manufacture that. I receive it.

Letting God Have the Win

There's a version of me — very relatable, probably very human — that wants to keep a little of the credit. To say "well, yes, God helped, but I also really brought it together."

Isaiah 26:12 doesn't leave a lot of room for that. And honestly? I'm not sure I want it to anymore.

Because if God gets the credit for what's good, then the good things in my life are more secure than I thought. They weren't held together by my best effort alone. They were held together by Someone who doesn't have off days.

That's a trade I'll take.

What I'm Carrying Into Today

I finished my coffee. The dog looked at me. The refrigerator kept humming.

I didn't do anything spiritual or significant in that moment. But I noticed it — the peace of it — and I thought: thank You. Not for some grand thing. Just for this. The ordinary, established, unearned peace of a regular morning in a life I didn't build alone.

That's enough. More than enough, really.

A Prayer for Today

Lord, I want to be honest with You — I spend a lot of energy thinking I'm the one holding things together. And some days I really believe it. Thank You for being patient with that particular brand of stubbornness.

Thank You for the peace underneath my ordinary days. The kind I didn't earn and couldn't have manufactured on my own. Thank You for a marriage that works, for a kid who turned out good, for work that means something, for mornings that are just — still and fine and yours.

Help me receive the good things in my life instead of just managing them. And when I catch myself taking credit for what You did — which, let's be honest, will probably happen again today — remind me gently. I don't need a lightning bolt. Just a nudge.

You establish the peace. I'll try to actually rest in it.

Amen.
