Daily Prayer: When Everything Has a Ceiling Except God
Daily Prayer: When Everything Has a Ceiling Except God
"To all perfection I see a limit, but your commands are boundless."
— Psalm 119:96
I was looking at a candle on the kitchen counter this morning — one of those pretty ones I bought with good intentions — and I noticed it had burned all the way down to a thin black wick sitting in about a quarter inch of hardened wax. That's it. That's all that's left. A candle that smelled like cedar and vanilla and cost more than I'd like to admit, just... done.
It made me smile a little, honestly. Everything runs out eventually.
Even the Best Things Have an Edge
I've been sitting with Psalm 119:96 for a few days now, and I keep coming back to that first part: "To all perfection I see a limit."
The psalmist isn't complaining. He's just noticing. And I find that kind of refreshing — this clear-eyed observation that even the most impressive, most beautiful, most carefully made things in the world have a stopping point. A ceiling. A last drop of wax.
My husband makes the best scrambled eggs I've ever had. I mean genuinely excellent eggs — low heat, a little cream cheese, patient stirring. But there are only so many eggs in the carton. The best meal ends. The best conversation winds down. The best nap has an alarm attached to it.
Even perfection — or the closest thing to it we can get our hands on — is finite.
Which Makes the Second Half Even Better
"But your commands are boundless."
I love the contrast here. Not dramatic, not loud — just a quiet pivot. But. One small word doing an enormous amount of work.
God's commands aren't just good instructions for living a decent life. They're described here as boundless — without limit, without a ceiling, without a wick that burns down to nothing. There's no bottom of the barrel. No end of the supply.
I think about that in the context of my ordinary days. I work, I come home, my husband and I figure out dinner and talk about our adult daughter and her life unfolding out there in the world — which is its own kind of wonderful and its own kind of strange, parenting someone who doesn't need parenting anymore so much as she needs a soft place to land occasionally.
Most of my days are good. They're just also finite. There's a limit to my energy, my focus, my patience on a crowded call at work. There's a limit to how many times I can explain something before my brain decides it's done explaining.
But God's word? No such limit. It doesn't run low. It doesn't get to the end of itself and shrug.
I Find That Genuinely Comforting
I'm not someone who needs everything to be unlimited. I actually like a good boundary. A contained thing is often a beautiful thing — a well-edited book, a thoughtfully arranged room, a meal that ends before you're too full.
But knowing that God's word is the one thing without a ceiling? That's steadying in a way I didn't expect when I first read this verse.
It means I can keep going back. Keep reading the same passages and find something I hadn't noticed. Keep praying the same prayers and not worry that I'm wearing out the welcome. Keep leaning on the same promises and not wonder if they've expired.
They haven't. They don't.
A Small Thing, Seen Clearly
I threw away the burned-out candle. Replaced it with a new one — same scent, because I still like it. And I thought, this is fine. Things run out. That's part of what makes them precious.
But I'm glad there's something that doesn't.
I'm glad the thing that doesn't run out is the thing that matters most.
A Prayer for Today
Lord, I notice limits everywhere — in myself especially. My attention, my patience, my good ideas. They're all finite, and honestly, most days that's okay. I'm not asking for more than I can hold.
But thank You that Your word isn't like that. Thank You that I can come back to it tomorrow and it won't be worn thin. Thank You that "boundless" is the word — not "sufficient" or "adequate" but actually without limit.
Help me remember that today when I hit my own ceiling — which I will, probably before lunch. Remind me that Yours isn't there.
Amen.
