What If Your Time Was Worth More Than Money on Your Block | A Neighborly Tip
What If Your Time Was Worth More Than Money on Your Block | A Neighborly Tip
I noticed something a few years back. Two neighbors on my street — one a retired electrician, one a young mom who bakes like it's a spiritual gift — had exactly what the other one needed. He needed someone to watch his dog on Tuesdays. She needed a ceiling fan installed and had no idea where to start. Neither one of them had a lot of extra money. But they both had time, and they both had something worth offering. That simple exchange stuck with me, because it felt like something older than cash. Something more honest.
A time bank works on that same instinct. One hour of your time equals one hour of someone else's — no matter what the skill is. A lawyer's hour is worth the same as a gardener's hour. I think that part is what makes it feel almost radical, in the gentlest possible way. It puts people on equal footing before they even say hello. And I've noticed that when people feel like equals, they actually show up for each other. Not out of obligation, but out of something more like genuine care — the kind that quietly holds a neighborhood together without anyone making a big announcement about it.
Starting one doesn't have to be complicated. A shared notebook, a group chat, a simple spreadsheet — I've seen it work with nothing fancier than that. What matters more is the spirit behind it. I think there's something in us that wants to be needed and to need others in return, and a time bank just gives that instinct a name and a little structure. If your street has people in it — and it does — then it already has everything it needs to begin.
