What If Your Time Was the Currency Everyone Actually Wanted | A Neighborly Tip
What If Your Time Was the Currency Everyone Actually Wanted | A Neighborly Tip
I noticed something a while back — most of us are sitting on a small fortune and have no idea. Not in a bank account, not in a retirement fund. It's the hour you could spend teaching someone to hem pants, the afternoon you could give helping a neighbor sort through paperwork they've been afraid to open, the Tuesday morning you know by heart how to make a really good soup. A time bank works on a simple idea: one hour of your time equals one hour of someone else's, no matter what either of you does with it. A retired engineer's hour is worth exactly the same as a college student's hour. I think that's quietly radical.
When I first heard about time banks, I almost talked myself out of caring. It sounded like something that required a committee and a laminated sign-up sheet. But the ones that actually work start with something much smaller — two or three neighbors who agree to keep track, loosely, of what they've offered and what they've received. Someone picks up a prescription. Someone else watches the dog for a weekend. Someone sits with an elderly neighbor on a Thursday because loneliness is real and company costs nothing but time. There's a kind of grace in that exchange that money genuinely cannot replicate. I believe that.
What I keep coming back to is how a time bank asks you to see yourself differently — not as someone with limited resources, but as someone with something worth giving. That reframe alone feels like enough reason to try. I'm not saying it fixes everything, because it doesn't. But I've noticed that the neighborhoods where people know each other's names tend to feel safer, warmer, and a little more like the kind of place you actually want to come home to. A time bank is one way to start knowing names.
