The One Thing Your Neighborhood Has Forgotten How to Do | A Neighborly Tip

I noticed something a few years back, right after a bad storm knocked out power on our street for two days. Nobody really knew who to call. People were peeking through curtains, wondering if their neighbors were okay, but nobody had a list. Nobody had a number. We had every app imaginable on our phones and somehow no way to reach the person three doors down. That stuck with me in a way I couldn't shake.

A phone tree is about as low-tech as it gets — a simple, shared list where each person knows to check on two or three others if something happens. No platform, no algorithm, no monthly subscription. Just names, numbers, and the understanding that somebody is paying attention. I think there's something quietly dignified about that. It says: you matter enough for me to write your name down. And honestly, I believe that's the kind of thing God nudges us toward without us always recognizing it — just being present for the people He placed nearest to us.

Starting one doesn't require a meeting or a committee or anyone being officially in charge. I started ours with a single index card and a conversation at the mailbox. Now there are eleven households on it. We've used it for power outages, a missing dog, and once just to let everyone know the road was iced over. It's not dramatic. It's just real. And I find myself thinking that the most meaningful things in a neighborhood rarely are dramatic — they're just consistent, and kind, and showing up before anyone even has to ask.
