I noticed something a little uncomfortable about myself a few years ago — I was far more willing to accept help from strangers on the internet than from the woman who lives three houses down. There's something about proximity, I think, that makes us nervous. Like needing help from a neighbor makes it too real, too visible, too close to admitting we can't do everything alone. A time bank, at its most basic, is just a way to swap hours. You give one, you get one. A retired teacher tutors a teenager. A young plumber fixes a leaky sink for an elderly widow. Nobody pulls out a wallet. It sounds almost too simple to matter — and yet something about it does.

What I find genuinely moving about the idea is that it assumes everyone has something worth offering. Not just the people with impressive resumes or specialized degrees, but the person who makes really good soup, or the one who's patient enough to sit with someone who just needs company on a Tuesday afternoon. I think that assumption — that your time has the same worth as mine — is quietly radical in a world that spends a lot of energy telling people otherwise. It's the kind of thing that, if you let it, starts to feel a little like grace.

I haven't started a formal time bank in my own neighborhood yet, but I've been sitting with the idea for a while now. I keep coming back to it the way you come back to a book you're not quite ready to finish. If it's something that's been rattling around in your mind too, I'd just say — I think the version that works is the one that starts small, maybe just between four or five people who already trust each other a little. The structure matters less than the willingness to show up and say, honestly, here's what I have, and here's what I need.
