Something To Celebrate: Watermelon Day

August 3rd is National Watermelon Day, which is either a fact you already knew or a fact that just made your afternoon approximately 40% better. Either way, here we are.
There is something quietly wonderful about a fruit that requires both hands, a cutting board, and a general acceptance that you will get juice on your shirt. Watermelon does not let you be precious about things. It shows up at summer cookouts, at kitchen counters at 11pm, at picnic tables where someone always cuts the slices just a little too thick and nobody complains. It is the edible version of a long exhale.
Here is the thing about small holidays like this one: they are not really about the watermelon. They are little reminders that the calendar is full of reasons to pause, even briefly, even just for a moment between the to-do lists and the background noise of ordinary life. There is always something to celebrate. Sometimes it is enormous and obvious. Sometimes it is a striped green fruit that is technically 92% water and entirely, stubbornly delightful.
So today, if you can, grab a slice. Eat it over the sink if you want. Let it be messy and sweet and completely without agenda. You have earned a small, uncomplicated joy today. Go ahead and take it.
