Something To Celebrate: Just Because Day

Here is a tiny, delightful fact to tuck into your pocket: Just Because Day is observed every year on August 27th, and nobody is entirely sure who started it. Which is, honestly, very on-brand for a holiday whose entire philosophy is does it need a reason?
We spend so much of everyday life waiting for permission to enjoy things. We save the good candles for a special occasion. We order the boring salad instead of the pasta because, well, it is not really a celebration night. We tell ourselves we will take that slow morning walk when things calm down a little. Just Because Day gently taps you on the shoulder and whispers that Tuesday afternoon in late August is, in fact, a perfectly legitimate occasion for the good candles.
Here is the quietly radical truth underneath this silly little holiday: there is always something worth celebrating, even when life feels ordinary and a bit worn at the edges. The coffee was hot. The dog did something ridiculous. You made it through a hard week, or a hard month, or just a hard Tuesday. You exist, which is genuinely improbable if you think about it long enough. Any of these will do nicely.
So today, just because it is today, do one small thing that asks nothing of you except enjoyment. Light the candle. Order the pasta. Take the long way home. No justification required, no special occasion necessary, and absolutely no explanation owed to anyone. Just because is reason enough.
