Daily Prayer: When You're Running on Empty and God Isn't
Daily Prayer: When You're Running on Empty and God Isn't
"Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom."
— Isaiah 40:28
I noticed my coffee had gone cold again.
Not dramatically cold. Just that lukewarm, no-man's-land temperature where it's not worth microwaving but also not worth pretending it's fine. I'd poured it with every intention of drinking it while it was hot, and then approximately seventeen small things happened, and there it sat.
I laughed a little, standing at the counter. Not because it was funny exactly, but because it was so predictable. So perfectly, ordinarily me.
The Ordinary Rhythm of a Full Life
Life right now is full in the best way. My husband and I have found this comfortable groove after years of figuring each other out — the kind where you can have a whole conversation in five minutes and a whole silence in twenty and both feel like connection.
My son is grown now, which still catches me off guard sometimes. He calls when he wants to, which I've decided to read as a good sign. He doesn't need me to hold the map anymore. I'm more like a favorite rest stop — reliably there, hopefully with snacks.
Work keeps my brain moving. The house keeps my hands moving. And somewhere in between all of that, I move through my days — making meals, answering emails, forgetting coffee — and it is genuinely, honestly good.
But I do get tired.
The Part That Stopped Me
I've read Isaiah 40:28 probably a hundred times. It's one of those verses that lives on coffee mugs and wall prints, which I say without judgment because I own both.
But something about reading it this time — standing there with my cold coffee, in the middle of a perfectly normal day — made me actually stop on one phrase.
He will not grow tired or weary.
I think I'd always read that as encouragement for the dramatic moments. The grief seasons. The crisis points. The times when you feel like you genuinely cannot take another step.
But that morning it landed differently. It landed in the ordinary.
God is not tired of the small stuff either. Not tired of the repeated prayers. Not weary of the same requests I've brought back seventeen times. Not sighing at the lukewarm version of me that shows up on a regular Wednesday.
Everlasting Isn't Just a Long Time
I think "everlasting" can feel abstract until you set it next to something very concrete — like the fact that I need eight hours of sleep to function like a reasonable human, and even then, I'm slow until the second cup.
God doesn't have a second cup. God doesn't have a slow morning. God doesn't run out of bandwidth for my particular needs because He was already up late handling someone else's crisis in another time zone.
His understanding, the verse says, no one can fathom. And I find that both humbling and genuinely comforting — because it means He's not working with incomplete information about my life. He knows the whole of it. The parts I've shown Him and the parts I haven't gotten around to mentioning yet.
He's not guessing at what I need. He's not approximating. He is not, to put it plainly, winging it.
What I'm Taking Into Today
I reheated the coffee. It was fine.
And I carried this verse with me through the rest of the day — not as a motivational poster moment, but as a small, steady reminder. That the God I'm talking to when I pray is not distracted, not depleted, not halfway listening while managing something more important.
He is the Creator of the ends of the earth, and He has time for me. He has understanding I can't even begin to measure. And He is not, not even a little bit, tired of showing up.
That's the kind of thing that makes a cold-coffee morning feel a lot lighter.
A Prayer for Today
God, thank You for not being tired. I know that sounds like a strange thing to say out loud, but I mean it. Thank You that when I come back with the same worries and the same small prayers and the same ordinary Tuesday version of myself, You are not depleted by it. You are not rolling Your eyes. You are right there, fully present, with understanding that goes so much further than mine.
Help me to actually believe that today — not just nod at it as a nice idea, but really let it settle. You are not weary of me. You are not out of patience. You made the ends of the earth, and You know my name, and somehow that is both enormous and personal at the same time.
I'm grateful for the full, ordinary, good life I get to live. Help me see Your steadiness woven all through it — in the routine and the rhythm and yes, even the reheated coffee.
Amen.
