Daily Prayer: When Your Soul Is Running on Empty
Daily Prayer: When Your Soul Is Running on Empty
"As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God."
— Psalm 42:1
Here's something nobody tells you about summer Tuesdays: they have a particular kind of tired built right into them.
Not the good tired, like after a long hike or finishing a project you're proud of. The other kind. The kind where you've been going since early morning, the house is warm, and somewhere between your second cup of coffee and answering the fourteenth email, you realize you haven't taken a single breath that felt like it actually counted.
That's where I was when I landed on Psalm 42:1 this morning.
A Deer Doesn't Politely Request Water
I've read this verse probably a hundred times. And for most of those hundred times, I pictured something peaceful — a gentle deer at a babbling brook, soft light, maybe a little mist rising off the water. Very screensaver-ish.
But that word pants? That's not a peaceful word. That's a desperate word.
That deer isn't strolling. It's been running. It's dry-mouthed, sides heaving, completely out of reserves. It doesn't want water in a vague, general sense. It needs it the way you need air when you've been underwater too long.
And the Psalmist says: that's my soul. That's what it feels like when I've gone too long without God.
The Thing About Summertime Fullness
Summer has a sneaky way of feeling full and empty at the same time.
The calendar fills up fast — kids visiting (mine is grown now, which is its own strange adjustment), schedules that blur the line between weekday and weekend, work that doesn't pause just because the weather changed. My husband and I have been in that season where we talk at each other more than to each other. Not out of conflict, just logistics. Dinner plans. Who's picking up what. Did we call so-and-so back yet.
I love my life. I genuinely do. But loving your life doesn't mean you don't get depleted by it.
And depletion has a way of being quiet about itself until it isn't anymore.
When Did I Last Actually Drink?
That's the question this verse keeps asking me.
Not "when did I last read my Bible" as a checkbox. Not "when did I last go to church." Those things matter. But the verse isn't about religious activity. It's about thirst. It's about the soul recognizing what it actually needs and having the honesty to say so out loud.
I think sometimes I mistake being busy for being nourished. I mistake doing good things — helpful things, even spiritual things — for actually spending time with God. They're not the same. A deer can be surrounded by beautiful green grass and still die of thirst.
The soul needs what the soul needs. And it will let you know, one way or another.
The Gift of the Ache
Here's what I've slowly come to appreciate about this kind of spiritual longing: it means something is still alive in there.
You only thirst for what you know is real. You only long for what you've tasted before. The ache itself is a kind of faith — evidence that somewhere underneath the busyness and the Tuesday-tiredness, there's a part of me that knows exactly where the water is.
It's not far. It never was.
I just have to stop pretending I'm not thirsty.
A Prayer for the Depleted and Honest
God, I'm not going to dress this up.
I've been running on fumes and calling it fine. I've been filling my hours with good stuff and somehow still ending up dry. I've talked about You more than I've talked to You lately, and I think we both know the difference.
This verse hit me today because it's true. My soul is that deer. Not graceful. Not composed. Just deeply, genuinely thirsty for You.
So here I am. Not with everything figured out, not with a clean quiet-time setup and a journal and the right candle lit. Just here. Tired and honest and hoping that's enough to start.
You said You'd be found when I seek You. I'm counting on that today.
Amen.
If this landed somewhere real for you today, feel free to share it with someone who might need it. We're all just deer looking for water out here.
