Daily Prayer: When Something Good Just Keeps Flowing

Daily Prayer: When Something Good Just Keeps Flowing

A quiet moment of reflection

"Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them."
— John 7:38

Here's a thing I've noticed about July: it has this particular way of making you feel both full and completely wrung out at the same time.

The summer has been doing its thing — long days, full calendars, that specific kind of tired that comes from too much sun and not enough stillness. It's a Wednesday, which, honestly, is just a Thursday pretending to be brave. And somewhere between my second cup of coffee and trying to remember if I responded to that email, I landed on this verse.

Rivers of living water will flow from within them.

I had to sit with that for a minute.

I Don't Always Feel Like a River

Most days I feel more like a slow drip from a faucet that needs a new washer. Not exactly the rushing, life-giving imagery Jesus was going for.

My adult kid texted me something this morning that made me laugh out loud, and then twenty minutes later I was staring at a work deadline wondering where my capacity went. That's just the rhythm of the season right now. Full life, good life — but sometimes running on whatever's left at the bottom of the cup.

So when I read "rivers of living water will flow from within them," I don't immediately picture myself as Niagara Falls. I picture, maybe, a creek. Something modest and steady. Something that keeps moving even when it doesn't feel dramatic about it.

The Part That Actually Caught Me

The verse doesn't say the water flows because you tried hard enough, or because you got enough sleep, or because you handled the week with exceptional grace.

It says: whoever believes.

That's the condition. That's the whole thing.

Not whoever performs. Not whoever has it together by mid-July. Not whoever managed to keep the houseplants alive this summer (mine are clinging to life and I respect their resilience).

Whoever believes.

I think about what that means on an ordinary Wednesday when I'm not feeling particularly flowing or particularly inspired. The promise isn't that I generate the water. The promise is that it flows from within — which implies the source is already there. Already placed. Already living.

Marriage, Motherhood, and the Ordinary Week

My husband and I had a pretty unremarkable conversation last night about what to make for dinner. It was not spiritual. It involved leftover chicken and some debate about whether we had enough rice.

But somewhere in that ordinary back-and-forth, I noticed something. There was something easy between us. Something that wasn't earned in that moment — it was just there. Accumulated. Flowing.

I think that's what this verse is pointing at, at least partly. It's not the big dramatic moments where faith shows up. It's the ordinary Wednesday. The leftover chicken. The text from your adult child that makes you snort-laugh at 8am. The work deadline you meet even when you didn't feel up to it.

Something keeps moving. Something keeps showing up. And I don't think that's entirely me.

What I Keep Coming Back To

I notice I return to this verse when I feel the most like I have nothing left to give. Which is, maybe, exactly when it's meant to be read.

Because rivers don't generate themselves. They're fed. Continuously. From somewhere deeper than the surface.

And I think that's the quiet confidence in this promise — not that I'll always feel it, but that it's happening whether I feel it or not. Belief is the root. The water figures itself out.

I find that genuinely comforting. Not in a greeting-card way. In a okay, I can keep going today kind of way.

A Prayer for Today

God, it's Wednesday. Mid-July. I'm a little tired and a little grateful and mostly just here.

I believe you. I want to keep believing you, even on the days it doesn't feel like rivers — when it feels more like a slow drip and I'm just hoping it counts.

Thank you for the promise that the source isn't me. That's honestly a relief.

Help me trust that something is flowing even when I can't feel it. Help me be good to the people around me today — my husband, my kid, the coworker who needs patience I'm not sure I have.

And if today is just ordinary — just leftover chicken and unanswered emails and another Wednesday — let that be enough. Let me be enough in it.

You said rivers. I'll trust you on that.

Amen.
