Daily Prayer: When My Soul Finally Stops Running

Daily Prayer: When My Soul Finally Stops Running

A quiet moment of reflection

"Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him."
— Psalm 62:1

I noticed something the other day while I was waiting for my coffee to finish brewing.

I was just standing there — not scrolling, not making a list in my head, not mentally replanning the evening. Just standing in the kitchen, watching the last bit of coffee drip down, listening to the small ordinary sounds of the house. And something in me just... settled.

It lasted maybe forty-five seconds. Then my phone buzzed and I was back.

But I kept thinking about those forty-five seconds.

The Soul That Won't Sit Still

I think my soul is, by nature, a pacer. It likes to walk the hallway of my thoughts at odd hours, picking things up and putting them back down. It's not anxious exactly — it's just busy. Occupied. Always half-attending to something.

Which is why Psalm 62:1 hits me the way it does every single time I read it.

Truly my soul finds rest in God.

Not eventually. Not after I've handled everything on my plate. Not once the work project wraps up or my adult kid texts back or I finally figure out what to make for dinner this week. Truly. Like David is insisting on it. Like he had to say it out loud to remind himself it was real.

I understand that impulse completely.

The Good, Ordinary Weight of a Full Life

My days are full in the best way. I work. I'm married to someone I genuinely like being around, which — after a lot of years — I do not take lightly. My kid is grown now, which means our relationship has shifted into something I didn't quite expect: more like two adults who actually choose to talk to each other, which is honestly wonderful.

None of it is dramatic. Most of it is good. But even a good, full life has a kind of weight to it — the pleasant accumulation of responsibilities and people and small decisions that never quite stops.

And my soul, bless it, tries to carry all of it at once.

Rest Isn't What I Thought It Was

For a long time I thought rest was about doing less. Getting away. Finding a stretch of time with nothing in it.

I still think that's nice. I'm not against a Saturday with nothing scheduled. But I've noticed it doesn't actually fix the thing my soul is looking for. I can have a completely free afternoon and still feel that low hum of unrest underneath everything.

What David is describing in this psalm feels different. It's not circumstantial. It's not dependent on the calendar clearing up or the noise dying down. It's a resting in something — or Someone — solid enough to hold the weight.

My salvation comes from him.

Not from my own good management of things. Not from keeping all the plates spinning gracefully. From him.

Forty-Five Seconds at a Time

I'm not going to pretend I've mastered this. My soul still paces. I still pick up my phone more than I should and mentally rehearse conversations that haven't happened yet.

But I think about those forty-five seconds by the coffee maker. How something in me recognized — even briefly — that I was okay. That I was held. That I didn't have to be anywhere other than right there.

I think that's what it feels like when my soul actually finds what it's been looking for.

God doesn't seem to be in a hurry about teaching me this. He lets me pace. He lets me pick things up and put them down. And then, in the middle of the most ordinary moment — standing in my own kitchen, waiting on coffee — He reminds me that rest was available the whole time.

I find that both humbling and deeply kind.

A Prayer

God, my soul is doing that thing again where it won't sit down.

I'm not sure what it's looking for exactly — or maybe I am, and I just keep forgetting that You're already it.

Thank You for being the kind of God who doesn't make me earn the rest. Who doesn't wait until I've handled everything before You'll hold me. I think I need to hear that more than I realize.

Help me remember it today — not in some big spiritual moment, but in the small ones. The forty-five seconds between one thing and the next.

My soul finds rest in You. I want to actually live like that's true.

Amen.
