Daily Prayer: When God Actually Hears You
Daily Prayer: When God Actually Hears You
"The Lord is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayer of the righteous."
— Proverbs 15:29
I was standing at the kitchen counter this morning, waiting for my coffee to finish, watching the steam rise off my mug in that slow, lazy curl — and I thought, this is actually nice.
Not profound. Just nice. The house was still. My husband had already left for work. My adult daughter and I had exchanged a few texts — the kind that are just memes and one-word answers, which is honestly our love language. And I had a few minutes to just stand there and breathe before the day picked up speed.
It was in that small, unhurried moment that this verse came back to me.
The Part We Skip Over
When I read Proverbs 15:29, I think most of us zero in on the first half — the part about the wicked. We do a quick mental audit of ourselves, decide we probably clear that bar, and move on.
But the second half is the part worth sitting with: He hears the prayer of the righteous.
Not just receives it. Not just tolerates it. Hears it.
There's something personal in that word. It's the same way my husband hears me when he puts his phone down and actually turns toward me. It's the same way I heard my daughter the first time she called me from her own apartment with a real problem, and I realized she wasn't just talking — she was trusting me with something.
Hearing is presence. Hearing means you matter enough to be listened to.
What Righteous Actually Means Here
I'll be honest — the word righteous used to make me feel like it was pointing at someone else. Someone more put-together. Someone who doesn't forget to pray for three days straight and then comes back to God like, "Hey, sorry, it's been a week."
But I think righteousness in this context isn't about perfection. It's about orientation. It's about which direction you're facing.
The righteous are the ones who keep turning back toward God. Who bring their coffee-steam mornings and their mundane Tuesdays and their slightly ridiculous text threads with their kids — and say, here, this is my life, I'm still talking to You about it.
That's not a high bar. That's an open door.
The Ordinary Prayer Life Nobody Talks About
My prayer life is not glamorous. I want to put that on record.
It happens in the car. It happens in that five-minute window before I open my laptop for work. It happens when I'm folding laundry and thinking about something my daughter said and I just start talking to God about it mid-fold, like He's standing in the laundry room with me — which, theologically, I believe He is, so that tracks.
I used to think real prayer required a special setup. A journal. A candle. A dedicated chair. And I do love those things when I have them. But Proverbs 15:29 doesn't say He hears the prayer of the righteous who have a candle and a quiet room.
He just hears.
That makes me feel less behind and more accompanied. Like I don't have to earn my way into the conversation — I'm already in it.
Far and Near
The contrast in this verse is striking when you let it land. Far. Near. Those are not subtle words.
And I think the distance isn't punishment so much as it's the natural consequence of turning away. When we're walking away from something, it gets farther behind us. That's just physics. God doesn't chase people down who are running the other direction — but He stays put, which means turning around is always an option.
I find that quietly comforting. The door doesn't close. The distance is closeable.
And for those of us who are just trying to show up — imperfectly, routinely, sometimes distracted — the promise is that He's near. That He hears. That our ordinary words land somewhere real.
What I'm Taking Into Today
I'm not going to do anything dramatic with this verse. I'm just going to carry it.
I'll probably pray in the car again. I'll probably text my daughter something ridiculous. I'll probably make a second cup of coffee and watch the steam curl up again and think, this is actually nice.
And somewhere in all of that ordinary, I'll remember — He hears me. Not because I've earned it. Because I'm facing the right direction and I'm still talking.
That's enough. That's more than enough.
A Prayer for Today
God, thank You for hearing me — even when what I bring You is small and scattered and honestly a little repetitive. I know I'm not always eloquent. I know sometimes I circle back to the same worries like I forgot we already talked about them. Thank You for being patient with that.
Help me keep turning toward You. Not perfectly — just consistently. And on the days when I drift, remind me that You're still right there, and turning back around doesn't require an apology speech. Just a turn.
I'm grateful You hear ordinary people living ordinary days. That's most of us. That's me.
Amen.
