Daily Prayer: When the Beginning and the End Already Know Your Name
Daily Prayer: When the Beginning and the End Already Know Your Name
""I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.""
— Revelation 1:8
I was standing at the kitchen counter this morning with my coffee, watching the light come through the window at that particular angle where it catches the dust on the glass and makes the whole thing look kind of golden and a little embarrassing at the same time.
And I just stood there for a minute. Not thinking about anything important. Just noticing.
That's a rare thing for me — just standing still without a mental to-do list scrolling in the background. So I stayed with it a little longer than usual.
The Verse That Stopped Me This Week
I've read Revelation 1:8 more times than I can count. It's one of those verses that gets stitched on things and printed on bookmarks and quoted in big, sweeping sermons about the end of the world.
But this week, sitting with it slowly, it landed differently.
"I am the Alpha and the Omega... who is, and who was, and who is to come."
It's not just a statement about God's timeline. It's a statement about God's presence in every point along that timeline. Including right now. Including the dusty kitchen window and the cooling coffee and the ordinary Wednesday of it all.
He's not watching from the end of the story. He's in every sentence of it.
What It Feels Like to Be Known That Completely
My husband and I have been married long enough that he can tell from the way I set my coffee mug down whether I'm actually okay or just saying I'm okay. That kind of knowing took years to build.
God's knowing isn't like that — earned slowly, accumulated through observation. His knowing is complete from the start. From before the start. He already knows the version of me from twenty years ago and the version of me I haven't become yet, and He's not surprised by either one of them.
I find that either very comforting or slightly terrifying, depending on the day. Today it's mostly comforting.
The Part About My Kid
My daughter is an adult now, which means most of my parenting happens sideways — in a text here, a phone call there, a meal together when schedules line up. I don't have the same daily view of her life that I used to have.
But God does.
He who was there when she was born, who was there through every stage I witnessed and every moment I didn't — He is also who is to come in her life. Every chapter I won't be present for, He already is.
I think that's what this verse is really doing for me right now. It's not just theology. It's permission to breathe.
Alpha and Omega in the Middle Parts
We spend a lot of time thinking about beginnings and endings. New years, new jobs, big goodbyes. But most of life is the middle. The commute. The grocery run. The same dinner rotation that somehow keeps cycling back to pasta.
And here is God — the Alpha and the Omega — present in all of that middle. Not just bookending it. Actually in it. The Almighty, somehow also deeply interested in my Tuesday afternoon and the light on the kitchen window and the way I'm trying to be a good wife and worker and mom all at once without making it look like I'm trying too hard.
He was there before all of this started. He'll be there when it wraps up. And right now, He's here too.
That's a lot to sit with over a cup of coffee. But I think it's exactly the kind of thing worth sitting with.
A Prayer for Today
Lord,
I don't always feel the weight of who You are. Most mornings I just feel the weight of the day ahead, and You're somewhere in the background, patient as ever while I make my list and check my phone.
But this verse — this one stopped me.
You were there before I existed. You'll be there long after everything I'm worried about today has resolved itself one way or another. And somehow, in the middle of all of that infinite knowing, You're also here. Right now. With me.
I don't fully understand that. I'm not sure I'm supposed to.
Help me trust the parts of my life — and the people I love — that are already in Your hands. Help me remember that You're not just the God of big moments. You're the God of the ordinary ones too. The light through the window. The good marriage. The grown kid I still pray over every single day.
Thank You for being the beginning and the end. And thank You for being right here in the middle with me.
Amen.
