Daily Prayer: There Is No One Like You, Lord
Daily Prayer: There Is No One Like You, Lord
"How great you are, Sovereign lord! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears."
— 2 Samuel 7:22
I was refilling my coffee this morning — second cup, the good one I actually get to drink while it's still warm — and I noticed the light coming through the kitchen window at this particular angle that made the whole counter look golden.
Nobody else was around. My husband had already left for work. Our daughter had texted earlier about something funny that happened at her job, and I'd laughed out loud at my phone like a person with no dignity whatsoever.
It was just me, the coffee, and that light.
And for some reason, that was the moment this verse came to mind.
The Words David Said Out Loud
In 2 Samuel 7, David has just received this enormous promise from God — a covenant, really — about his family, his legacy, his future. And his response isn't to make a plan or write a list. He just... sits down in front of the Lord and starts talking.
He says: How great you are, Sovereign Lord. There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears.
I love that last part. As we have heard with our own ears.
It's so personal. It's not a theological statement being delivered from a podium. It's a man saying — I know this because I've lived it. I've heard it. I've seen it with my own eyes and ears and years.
What It Means to Actually Know Something
There's a difference between knowing something as a fact and knowing it the way David meant it.
I know, as a fact, that the Pacific Ocean is large. I've never stood at its edge and felt small in the good way. So I know it, but I don't really know it.
But I know — the way David meant — that God shows up. Not always the way I expected, and sometimes not until the very last possible second, which I think is His prerogative and also occasionally a little dramatic. But He shows up.
I've heard it. I've lived enough years now to say that with some confidence.
Greatness in the Ordinary Places
I think about how much of my faith has been built not in the big moments, but in the accumulated small ones.
In the years of working and praying and watching things come together in ways I couldn't have arranged. In the strange grace of watching our daughter grow into an actual adult person with her own opinions and her own faith and her own sense of humor — which, honestly, might be the most astonishing thing God has ever done near me personally.
In a marriage that still makes me laugh. In work that still feels meaningful. In a second cup of coffee going golden in a morning kitchen.
None of that is an accident. I genuinely believe that.
There Is No One Like You
What gets me about this verse is how David says it like it's the most obvious thing in the world. There is no one like you. Not as an argument. Not as a defense. Just as a plain, settled fact he has arrived at through the experience of being alive and paying attention.
I want to have that kind of settled knowing.
I think I'm getting there. Slowly, the way you learn most things that actually stick — not all at once, but in layers, over time, through coffee and light and answered prayers and a daughter who still texts me funny things.
There really is no one like Him. I've heard it with my own ears. I've seen it with my own life.
And that's worth saying out loud, even on an ordinary morning. Maybe especially then.
A Prayer for Today
Lord, I don't have David's way with words, but I think You already know that. Still — how great You are. I mean that. Not as a formality, but because I've seen enough now to know it's true. Thank You for showing up in ways I didn't predict and couldn't plan. Thank You for the ordinary mornings that are actually full of You, if I bother to notice. Thank You for the people You've put in my life — the ones who've stayed, the ones who've grown, the ones who still make me laugh. There really is no one like You. I just wanted to say it out loud today. Amen.
