Daily Prayer: Putting First Things First (Even When Your To-Do List Disagrees)
Daily Prayer: Putting First Things First (Even When Your To-Do List Disagrees)
"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
— Matthew 6:33
Here's a fun little personal fact: I have, on more than one occasion, made a to-do list just so I could write "make to-do list" at the top and immediately cross it off.
Productivity theater. I know. I'm working on it.
But I think there's something honest in that habit. It reveals what I'm actually doing most mornings — I'm scanning the landscape of my day, trying to get a grip on it before it gets a grip on me. And somewhere in that scan, God is supposed to be first. Matthew 6:33 says so, plain and simple.
It doesn't always go that way.
The Week Doesn't Wait for You to Be Ready
It's the middle of summer, which sounds like it should feel leisurely. And yet. The week has this way of arriving fully loaded on Monday morning, like a guest who showed up two hours early and is already asking what's for dinner.
Work emails. A husband who also has a full plate. An adult kid who is out there living their life — which is wonderful and also means our relationship has this new texture I'm still getting used to. You love them the same amount, but the parenting looks completely different now. More like being a consultant who never gets paid and also worries constantly.
So when I sit down with this verse, I feel the weight of what it's actually asking.
Seek first.
Not second. Not after I've checked my phone. Not after I've figured out what's for dinner or mentally drafted a response to that email that's been sitting in my inbox since Thursday.
First.
What "Seeking First" Actually Looks Like for Me
I want to be honest here — I don't always have a beautiful, candlelit morning routine where I open my Bible over a cup of perfectly brewed coffee while birds sing outside my window.
Sometimes I'm seeking God in the car before I walk into work. Sometimes it's a half-awake prayer at 6 a.m. that's really just me saying, "Okay, I need You today. I'm already behind. Help."
And I think He takes that. I think He actually prefers the real thing over the performance of it.
What I've noticed — and this took me an embarrassingly long time to notice — is that the days I at least attempt to orient toward God first have a different quality to them. Not easier, necessarily. But more grounded. Like I have a center of gravity that isn't just my own anxiety.
The days I skip it entirely? I'm running on vibes and caffeine, and by 2 p.m. I'm holding everything together with spiritual duct tape.
The Promise Tucked Into the End of That Verse
"...and all these things will be given to you as well."
This is the part I forget. Jesus had just been talking about worrying — about food, clothing, the basic stuff of life. And He essentially says: stop white-knuckling all of that. Seek the kingdom first, and the rest gets handled.
I'm not going to pretend I fully trust that on a cellular level every single day. I'm a planner. I like to know things are covered. Trusting that God will provide while I redirect my focus to Him requires a kind of faith that sometimes feels like stepping off a curb when you can't quite see the ground.
But I keep coming back to the fact that Jesus said it. Not as a suggestion. As a promise.
And I've seen it play out enough times in my own life that I can't dismiss it. The thing I was white-knuckling eventually worked out. The provision came. Not always the way I expected — but it came.
A Small Reorientation
I'm not trying to tell anyone how to run their morning. I know everyone's situation is different, and some seasons of life make "seeking first" feel like an absolute joke because you haven't slept in three days and someone always needs something.
But for me, right now, this verse is a gentle nudge — maybe more of a firm nudge — to stop treating God like an afterthought I get to when the urgent stuff settles down.
The urgent stuff never settles down. That's the trick. There will always be another email, another worry, another week that arrives fully loaded.
So I'm practicing putting Him first. Even imperfectly. Even on the days when "first" means a two-minute prayer in a parking lot.
I think that still counts.
A Prayer for Today
God, I'm not going to pretend I have this figured out. Most mornings I grab my phone before I even think about You, and I'm sorry for that. I want to seek You first — genuinely, not just as a ritual I check off so I can feel like a good Christian. Help me actually want You more than I want to have everything under control. Because I know You're not a backup plan. You're the whole point. Take the things I've been gripping too tightly today. I trust You with them — even on the days when that trust feels more like a decision than a feeling. Thank You for being patient with me. Amen.
