Daily Prayer: Learning to Love Without Keeping Score
"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud."
— 1 Corinthians 13:4
My husband refilled my coffee this morning without being asked.
He just picked up the pot, topped off my mug, and set it back down. No announcement. No waiting for a thank you. He was already halfway across the kitchen before I even registered what had happened.
It's such a small thing. But I sat there holding that warm mug and thought — that is what love actually looks like most of the time. Not grand gestures. Not speeches. Just someone quietly paying attention.
The Verse I've Heard a Thousand Times
I think most of us have heard 1 Corinthians 13:4 so often that it can start to slide right past us. It shows up at weddings, on wall art, on coffee mugs — which is a little ironic, given my morning.
But lately I've been sitting with it more slowly. Reading it like it's a checklist I'm actually meant to apply to myself, not just admire from a distance.
Patient. Kind. Not envious. Not boastful. Not proud.
That last one always snags me a little. Not proud. Because I think I can manage patient on a good day. Kind, usually. But pride? That one is sneaky. It doesn't always announce itself.
Where Pride Hides in Ordinary Life
It hides in the way I mentally note when I've done more than my fair share of something. In the half-second where I'm already composing the sentence that starts with, "Well, I already — " before my husband has even finished his thought.
It hides in the tiny, invisible scoreboard I didn't know I was keeping until I caught myself keeping it.
Nobody handed me that scoreboard. I picked it up myself. And the verse doesn't say love tries not to keep score. It says love doesn't. Full stop.
Loving an Adult Child Is Its Own Education
I think about this verse differently now that my child is grown. Parenting a young adult has this funny way of showing you where your patience has limits you didn't know existed.
It's not the hard stuff that tests me — it's the small stuff. The unsolicited advice I have to actively decide not to give. The opinions I hold back because they weren't asked for. The moments where I want to jump in and fix something and instead I just... don't.
That, I've learned, is also love. The patient, kind, non-boasting kind. The kind that trusts another person to figure it out.
I'm still working on it. I think that's probably the point.
What I Keep Coming Back To
The thing about this verse is that it doesn't describe a feeling. It describes a behavior. A series of choices made over and over again in ordinary moments — at the kitchen counter, in the middle of a phone call, in the pause before you say the thing you were about to say.
Love is patient. Not feels patient. Is patient. Present tense. Active. Something you do, not just something you have.
I find that both harder and more hopeful than the greeting card version. Harder, because it's a daily decision. More hopeful, because decisions can be made again tomorrow even when today wasn't perfect.
And honestly? My husband refilling my coffee without a word felt like a small sermon this morning. One I needed more than I knew.
A Prayer for Today
God, I want to love well today — not in some big, dramatic way, but in the small moments where it actually counts. Help me put down the scoreboard I keep picking back up. Help me be patient with the people I love most, which is sometimes the hardest place to start. Remind me that kindness isn't weakness and that holding back my pride isn't losing — it's choosing something better. I don't always get this right. But I'm grateful You keep meeting me in the ordinary places, in a refilled coffee cup, in a moment I almost missed. Help me pay attention. Amen.
