Daily Prayer: He Has Always Been Faithful

A quiet moment of reflection

"Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments."
— Deuteronomy 7:9

I found an old grocery list in the pocket of a jacket I hadn't worn in months. My handwriting, my shorthand — chkn thighs, that salad thing, yogurt x3 — completely mundane, completely mine. And for some reason it made me smile.

Life is made of these small, unremarkable things. Grocery lists. Coffee cups. The particular way afternoon light lands on the kitchen counter. And in the middle of all of it, God is faithfully, steadily present.

A Covenant That Doesn't Expire

Deuteronomy 7:9 is the kind of verse that sounds formal at first — covenant of love, a thousand generations — almost legal, almost ancient. And I guess it is ancient. That's actually the part I keep coming back to.

A thousand generations. That's not a metaphor for a long time. That's God essentially saying: I am not going anywhere. I was faithful before your great-great-grandmother was born, and I will be faithful long after everyone you love has gone home to me.

That's not a promise that comes with an expiration date or fine print. That's just... Him.

What Faithfulness Actually Looks Like From Here

I've been married long enough to know what real faithfulness looks like up close. It's not dramatic. It's showing up. It's keeping your word when it's inconvenient. It's being the same person on a hard day that you were on an easy one.

God has been that, for me, in ways I didn't always notice in the moment. I think about the years when our child was small and I was stretched thin in a hundred directions I never said out loud. I didn't always feel God's presence then. But looking back — He was there. In the provision that came through. In the friendship that appeared at the right time. In the morning that somehow always came.

Now our child is grown, doing adult things in their own adult life, and I find myself in this pleasantly unfamiliar space of watching from a little further back. And I can see it more clearly from here: God was faithful in all of it. The chapters I loved, the ones I'd rather not reread, and the perfectly ordinary ones in between.

The Part About Keeping His Commandments

I won't gloss over the second half of that verse. It's easy to hold onto the promise and skim past the condition — those who love him and keep his commandments.

I don't think this is God hedging His bets. I think it's more like... the natural shape of a relationship. When I love someone, I pay attention to what matters to them. I try to act accordingly, not to earn their love, but because loving them changes how I want to live.

Loving God works the same way for me. I keep His commandments — imperfectly, on a good day — because I love Him, not because I'm trying to make Him hold up His end of the deal. He already held up His end. He held it up before I existed.

Something Worth Knowing

The verse opens with know therefore — not feel, not hope, not wonder. Know.

There's something almost bracing about that. Like a friend putting a hand on your shoulder and saying, hey, look at me, this is real. Not a suggestion. Not a maybe. A settled fact you're invited to actually stand on.

I want to stand on it more. Not just read it and nod and move on to the grocery list in my other pocket.

I think about my own parents, their parents, the generations of people who loved God before me and passed something forward without even knowing they were doing it. And I think about what I'm passing forward now just by being someone who keeps showing up to this faith like it's real. Because it is.

God has been faithful across a thousand generations. He's not going to lose the thread with mine.

A Prayer for Today

God, thank You for being the kind of faithful that doesn't need me to prop it up. You've been keeping this covenant since before anyone I know was born, and You'll keep it long after. That's honestly a little staggering when I let myself think about it.

Help me to actually know that today — not just in my head, but in the way I go through my hours. Help me love You in the small, real ways, not just when I feel inspired to. And on the days when I'm running on autopilot and just trying to get the chicken thighs and make it to Friday — be patient with me. I have a feeling You will be.

You are faithful. I know it. I'm grateful for it. Amen.
