Daily Prayer: God Uses the Unlikely Ones (And I'm Relieved About That)
"But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong."
— 1 Corinthians 1:27
I was standing at the kitchen counter this morning, holding my coffee with both hands the way you do when you need the warmth more than the caffeine, and I noticed the light coming through the window hit the little chip in my favorite mug just right.
That mug is chipped. Has been for two years. I keep it anyway.
I don't know why that made me think of this verse, but it did.
The Kind of Person God Picks
I've read 1 Corinthians 1:27 probably a hundred times. And every time, I feel something like relief wash over me — the way you feel when someone finally says the thing you were hoping was true.
God picks the foolish things. The weak things. The chipped things, I'd wager.
Not because weakness is some kind of virtue trophy to collect. But because God doesn't seem to need us to be impressive. He's not building a highlight reel. He's building something real.
And real things have chips in them sometimes.
What "Wise" and "Strong" Actually Look Like From Here
I work a regular job. I come home. My husband and I talk about our day at the kitchen table like we have for years. My adult kid texts me things that are funny and occasionally bewildering, and I text back the same way.
This is my life. It is genuinely good. It is also not impressive on paper.
There's no grand platform, no bold calling with a logo attached to it. I'm not the person in the room who commands attention. I'm more likely the person who notices what's happening in the corner of the room and thinks about it for three days afterward.
And for a long time, I think I quietly assumed that meant I wasn't quite the right material for anything significant.
But That's Not What the Verse Says
It doesn't say God uses weak people reluctantly, like they were His last option. It says He chose them. Past tense, intentional, deliberate.
That's a different thing entirely.
Chosen isn't the same as settled for. Chosen means He looked at the whole spread and picked this. Picked the ordinary, the unpolished, the person standing at the counter with the chipped mug wondering if they're enough.
I find that genuinely funny, in the best possible way. Like God has a very specific sense of humor about how He does things — and it's the kind of humor I actually respect. Subversive. Warm. A little unexpected.
The Ordinary Stuff Is Where It Happens
I think the moments that matter most in my life have rarely looked significant from the outside.
A conversation with my kid that started as small talk and went somewhere real. A coworker who needed someone to just listen, not fix. A marriage that keeps choosing each other on the plain, ordinary days — not just the good ones, but the ones where we're both a little tired and still show up anyway.
None of that would make a headline. All of it, I think, is exactly the kind of thing God is doing through people like me.
Not because I'm special. Because He is. And He seems to like working through the unlikely.
What I'm Sitting With Today
I think I want to stop apologizing — even just internally — for not being a more impressive version of myself.
The mug works fine. The chip is just part of it now. And somehow, light still hits it in a way that makes me stop and notice.
Maybe that's the whole point.
A Prayer for Today
God, thank You for the part in Your Word where You just come out and say it — that You're not looking for the most polished person in the room.
Because honestly, that's good news for me.
I don't always feel wise or strong. I feel regular, mostly. I feel like someone who is doing her best with what she has and hoping it's enough.
And I think You're saying: yes. That's the one. That's who I meant.
So help me believe that today. Help me stop waiting to be more impressive before I show up fully. Help me trust that You can work through chipped, ordinary, everyday things — including me.
I love You. Thanks for picking me anyway.
