Daily Prayer: Choosing to Walk in the Light

A quiet moment of reflection

"Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God."
— John 3:20-21

I was putting away leftovers last night when I caught myself hoping my husband wouldn't notice I'd eaten the last of the good cheese. Not because I felt guilty, exactly. More because I just didn't want to explain it. It was a small, silly thing — the kind of moment that lasts about four seconds — but I noticed it.

I noticed the tiny instinct to hide.

The Small Shadows We Step Into

It wasn't a moral crisis. It was cheese. But there's something honest in paying attention to those little flickers, the micro-moments where my first impulse is to quietly sidestep being seen.

I think most of us do this more than we realize. Not with anything dramatic. Just with the small stuff. The email we answered curtly and then hoped no one brought up again. The excuse we gave that was technically true but not the whole story. The version of ourselves we present in a work meeting versus the one who ate the good cheese alone over the kitchen sink.

John 3:20-21 doesn't open with condemnation. It opens with an observation about human nature — that people who are doing things they know aren't right tend to avoid the light. Not because the light is harsh. But because it's honest.

What the Light Actually Feels Like

I used to read "coming into the light" as something dramatic. Like a big confessional moment, or a spiritual reckoning that required a whole afternoon and a box of tissues.

But I think it's usually smaller than that.

It looks like telling my husband, "I ate the last of the cheese, I'm sorry," and laughing about it together. It looks like going back to a coworker and saying, "I was short with you earlier and that wasn't fair." It looks like praying honestly instead of performing the version of prayer I think sounds good.

Whoever lives by the truth comes into the light. That phrase — lives by the truth — suggests it's a pattern, not a one-time event. It's the ongoing choice to be the same person whether anyone is watching or not.

Being Known Without Being Afraid

My daughter is grown now, which means my relationship with her has shifted into something I genuinely like — more friend than authority, more honest than managed. And one of the things I've noticed is that she can tell when I'm being real versus when I'm being careful. Kids always could. Adult children especially.

There's something freeing about being known. Fully known, not just the curated parts. It's the thing I love most about a long marriage — my husband has seen me at my least impressive and still shows up. That kind of being-seen doesn't feel like exposure. It feels like rest.

I think that's what God is offering here. Not "come into the light so I can catch you." But "come into the light so you can finally stop hiding, and see that I already know, and I'm still here."

Living Plainly Before God

The end of verse 21 is what gets me: "done in the sight of God." Not hidden from God, not approved by God — just plainly, openly in His sight. Like someone who's comfortable being seen because they're not pretending to be something they're not.

I want to live that way. Not perfectly, but honestly. Not with everything figured out, but with nothing tucked behind my back that I'm hoping God doesn't notice.

He notices. And somehow, that's the most comforting thing I know.

A Prayer for Today

Lord, You already know everything I've been quietly stepping around. The small evasions, the half-truths, the moments I chose the comfortable shadow over the honest light. I'm not bringing any of that to You because it's a surprise to You — I'm bringing it because it's a relief to stop carrying it alone.

Help me be a person who is the same whether anyone is watching or not. Help me find rest in being known by You, rather than spending energy managing what gets seen.

And honestly? Thank You for not making the light feel like a courtroom. It feels more like coming home. I'm grateful for that today.

Amen.
