Daily Prayer: Beautiful Feet and the Good News We Carry

A quiet moment of reflection

"How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, "Your God reigns!""
— Isaiah 52:7

I was putting on my shoes this morning — the sensible ones, not the cute ones — and I looked down at my feet and thought, these are not the feet of a mountain runner.

They are the feet of someone who walked to the coffee maker twice before actually turning it on. They are the feet that stood at the kitchen counter last night, half-listening to my husband's recap of a podcast while also mentally writing a grocery list. Practical feet. Loyal feet. Not exactly the stuff of poetry.

And then I read Isaiah 52:7, and I had to sit with it for a minute.

The Beauty Is in the Errand

Isaiah isn't describing someone dramatic. He's describing a messenger — someone who got up, put on their shoes, and went somewhere to tell people something true and good.

That's it. That's the beautiful thing.

Not the arrival. Not the applause. The going. The willingness to carry the news at all.

I find that genuinely encouraging, because most of my days are made up of small goings. The drive to the office. The text to my grown kid that says "thinking of you today" with a coffee cup emoji. The quiet word to a coworker who looks like she needs one. Nothing that would make a highlight reel.

But maybe that's actually the shape of it — the good news carried in ordinary hands, on ordinary feet, through an ordinary morning.

What We're Actually Announcing

The messenger in this verse isn't just delivering information. He's proclaiming something. Peace. Salvation. Your God reigns.

That's a lot to carry in a lunchbox.

But I think that's what we're doing, whether we mean to or not. Every time I choose patience in a moment that didn't earn it, or I say something honest instead of just convenient, or I show up for someone when I could've stayed home — I'm announcing something. That love is real. That God is still moving. That the story isn't over.

My husband and I have been married long enough that we've gotten pretty good at the shorthand of life together. We don't always use full sentences. Sometimes love looks like him putting my coffee cup in the right spot without being asked, and me not making a big deal out of the thing that doesn't actually matter. Small kindnesses. Small proclamations.

Our adult kid is out there living their own life now, and my job has shifted from daily logistics to something more like... occasional wisdom, offered gently, and mostly when asked. I think that shift is its own kind of good news — the kind that says: you're ready, and I believe in you.

Feet Don't Have to Be Fast

I used to read verses like this and feel a low-grade pressure, like I wasn't doing enough. Like the good news needed to be louder, or farther-reaching, or more organized.

But I think Isaiah is pointing at something simpler. The feet are beautiful because they went. Because someone decided the news was worth carrying and worth sharing, even over hard terrain, even without fanfare.

My terrain is a commute, a marriage, a job, a relationship with a grown child I'm still figuring out how to mother well. It's a neighborhood I drive through every day without always seeing it. It's a faith that sometimes feels like a quiet hum and sometimes feels like a full orchestra.

None of it is a mountain, exactly. But some days it kind of is.

And I think God looks at these sensible shoes and calls them beautiful anyway.

A Prayer for Today

Lord, I don't always feel like a messenger of good news. Some days I feel more like someone who forgot what she was going to say the moment she walked into the room. But you called these feet beautiful — the going kind, the ordinary kind — and I want to believe that.

Help me carry the good news today in the ways I actually can. In a kind word. In a patient moment. In the choice to show up instead of check out. In the small and steady proclamation that you are still here, still good, still reigning — even on a Tuesday when nobody's watching and I'm wearing the sensible shoes.

Thank you that you use regular people with regular feet. That's honestly the most encouraging thing I've read all week.

Amen.
